Ripe bananas, celery, and cabage juice would all be better. Lactose free whole milk would be the best kind if you want to stay with milk.

I was thinking about dairy products. I like milk but some people have trouble with dairy.

i also like and drink soy or almond milk.

Milk helped me out. I know some people have issues with dairy so they can't try it. My old GI doctor also said if you have issues with your gallbladder (GERD and gallbladder go hand in hand - something about the gallbladder bile and how it can cause or make GERD worse?) then milk is a bad idea.

Vanilla ice cream always helped mine... but the good stuff with only like 3 ingredients.

Hi all,

Here is my opinion from experience.

Milk, upon initial digestion, creates an acidic ash which intensifies GERD. It does not "coat" the stomach, which is a myth. I would strongly suggest trying a non-dairy product, such as Vanilla Soymilk.

sunbeam48 above, also presents some noteworthy alternatives.

jc77, are you currently under medical care?

Best,

Drink lots of water - it dilutes the acid and keeps the burning away a lot better than milk or ice cream will.

Agree 1000% on the gallbladder being a cause as well. (gall bladder produces bile reflux, rather than acid reflux. PH studies (or the 'up the nose with a rubber hose' test) tell you if it's acid or bile. Mine didn't get 'bearable' until I had my gall bladder out after a gall stone attack. The Nissan does NOT help bile reflux, so it's important to make sure you know which kind of reflux you have, because you might be able to control the acid with simple OTR remedies (even Pepcid or Tums as needed rather than PPI) and have your gall bladder removed - which is a LOT easier surgery to deal with than a Nissan!

I actually do drink soy-milk often also as wll as regular milk but i will continue with the soy milk if im burining. Just to see if this does anything.

I am under medical care. In fact i say my Gi specialsit today.

He told to take some ppi's, ive done this in the past and they helped.
we'll see if it helps again. I dont want to take them long term though.

Natural remedies im also willing to try.

As far as water, i drink lots of it, however, too much seems to aggivate the gerd. My doctor me that the water will just push the reflux back into my esophagus so i drink water but dont over do it when having bad gerd.

thanks all!

Hi jc77,

Everyone is different as to what works and what triggers reflux. I also have always found water a great way to "put out the fire".

I have a reactive stomach that is very sensitive, and I find Kefir really helps. It's 99% lactose free, and it's a probiotic as well. It's like drinking liquid yogurt. I drink it plain, but it comes flavored as well.

What works for one person doesn't for another. One man's comfort food/drink is another man's trigger. It's a mysterious condition, this GERD.

Good luck!

Agreed Denise! We all see to have that one thing we go to when it just gets real bad. Mine is low carb vanilla Atkins diet shakes. It's my daily 'breakfast' because it's the only thing I have found that coats my stomach enough so the morning meds don't make me nauseous. I'll use them during the day if need be as well.

Hi,

What is interesting is that standard liquid milk has much more Lactose than Yogurt or Ice Cream.

Here's a good article:

The less Lactose the less acidic ash upon intial digestion.
This tends to explain why I can tolerate Yogurt and Cheese better from a reflux point-of-view.
