Hi I haven't been on in a while but I finally had all the tests done and I was very surprised and disappointed with what Dr. K found. I was under the impression I was a daytime refluxer and just under average in severity. But all tests indicated I am a day AND night refluxer with LPR + GERD.
AND apparently I reflux a LOT. Oh yeah, both my LES and my UES are not performing well. I think one is weak and the other (UES) opens and closes out of sync When Dr. Kaufman told me I have "horrible" refux and I am what is called "a super refluxer" I was shocked. And at night it just stays longer in the esophagus which is even worse!

She put me on three new drugs and kept me on Elavil but upping the dosage. It's a viscous cycle with the reflux causing my severe cough and my severe cough causing my reflux.

I have to go back on induction phase of her book for two weeks. I'm so upset because I have many parties coming up. All good friends or family and I can't eat anything. And will probably be coughing. kitchen closes at 6. just as my husband comes home and my kid needs to be fed. And i'm meant to wait four hours before going to bed! This is all a nightmare for me since there is not option. And it seems pretty serious.

I'll be having an upper endoscopy in two weeks in her office and that is what i'm most worried about. Barretts or worse. I didn't think my esophagus was effected at all!

I don't know why I'm posting. Probably just for someone to help me to feel better about this.
Thanks for reading. PS She said I might need the surgery anyway and that I would qualify.

sorry to hear it is worse than you expected, but at least you do have the info if you decide o surgery. Which unfortunately sounds like where you may be headed.

Barretts isn't all that big of a deal as long as you can control the reflux. I have had it for about 7 years or more and since I had the nissen soon after they found it, it hasn't spread.

Take care,
Bill

I'm new here (been lurking since January). I was diagnosed with GERD and Barretts in January and LPR a few weeks ago by Dr. K. I have been a night time silent refluxer for many, many years (which explains my chronic post post nasal drip and sinusitis).

In October/November of 2012 I started to have episodes of heartburn/indigestion. As of January 6th of this year the reflux has been constant = 2/7 (seriously). This has been debilitating and my quality of life is awful.

I am on the diet as well and my kitchen closes at 5:30 per Dr. K and I am also classified as a super refluxer. Can I private message you?

What type of test did Dr. Kaufman perform on you. I'm new to this forum and a long time sufferer of reflux. I too feel as if my LES and UES Don't function in harmony with each other but my manometries haven't shown this. As a matter of fact most of my testing haven't been real impressive for acid reflux, only non-acid reflux. But I continue to have all the symptoms of reflux such as burning, worsening of my asthma extreme burping and LPR. I'm also on a very strict diet which is awful! I am considering surgery as I'm so tired of this controlling my life. I have Dr. Kaufman's book and have tried some of her tricks but I can honestly say If I venture away from bread, turkey, salads, unseasoned fish and chicken, decaf tea & water I will suffer. I hate this too!

Hi Teeth!

Kaufman did manometry, 24hr PH, and my favorite (not) the LEMG (i think? the thing with the needles to the throat. I don't really feel anything in there. But during the 24 hr thing there were times I felt like something was tugging the tube back and I think that might have been the esophagus opening and closing! Those tests were a trip to say the least. But I survived and I'm so glad I did because now I know it's the real deal. I'm happier to know than not know and when she told me I felt like I had a terminal illness! But now I'm not scared because I did remember she looked me right in the eye and said "I'm going to help you" which was very reassuring! Also she thinks I'm a good candidate for the surgery because my LES is weak.

I think if i had to stick to the Kaufman diet for the next 40 year I would be very depressed and isolated. I could never meet friends for wine or at a restaurant. Food brings me a lot of joy. Not a lot of it but I love most of the things that are forbidden. So I'm almost hoping for the surgery. I can't even drink more than a sip of water after six! I LOVE water.

I'm starting induction on Tuesday. I have a late dinner tonight and Passover at my house on Monday. Then it begins. PS I'm on Protinex, Zantac, Elavil and Gaviscon as needed. I'm out of the UK one which is horrible and thick but works better than the very thin US one as most of you know. So I'm ordering from a canadian pharmacy. OH and Alkaline water which I've been drinking a lot of anyway...

The links are not accessible JPT...
Diagnosed with GERD/IBS in 2007. However, my symptoms are most similar to LPR. I am still unsure of the IBS diagnosis.

Currently I am taking a natural approach to my symptoms since July 2011.

I've been drinking 9.5 for about four months BEFORE I knew she endorsed it! She gave me a bottle of evermore which is I think 8.9.

I get the 9.5 from a friend who has a machine. I get it fresh and I drink a lot of it. She was glad I was drinking it. I also cook with it.
