Hello!

I recently was diagnosed with GERD two years ago, and it manifested itself in the form of burping after certain trigger foods, or simply eating too much at once. Now, this has almost completely transitioned to me throwing up foods after I eat them! Sometimes, it is uncontrollable, even when I am sitting up . Other times, I know it will happen, so all i have to do is drink some water after a certain meal and lean down towards a garbage can, and the food just comes out. I understand this is indeed "gross", but I am seeking anyone's guidance. I have made an appt for a GP first, as I want a holistic perspective as to what is wrong...is this within normal limits of GERD??

Triggers for me have been really anything that is processed- especially chocolate and tomato sauces, and ice cream is almost always a definite. Could this be a stomach thing as well? Has anyone had this before?

Welcome to the forum PMo.

Great that you have figured out you have food triggers! There are tons of threads that maybe helpful on the forums. Just put "food journal" and "challenge test" in the search box at the top of the page. But check with your allergist before doing any testing! Doing testing at home can be dangerous if you have bad reactions!

I have lactose intolerance and sulfite sensitivity. I can eat ice cream if I eat 4-6 Lactaid tablets first. I don't have burping or reflux if I avoid foods containing more than my limit of sulfites.

Chocolate can have sulfites, especially the dark kind. It also can have lactose.
Tomato sauces often have onions and garlic, whicih contain sulfites.

You could also have GERD - come visit that forum. Although I got rid of my refluxing, I had an open LES valve at the top of the stomach so I needed acid reducers. Avoiding my triggers and keeping my stomach acid down was enough for me for many years.

PMo589,

I have severe GERD. It started out as heartburn, progressed to waking up with vomit in my mouth and then had such horrendous coughing episodes, that I had projectile vomiting. The projectile vomiting occured on a daily basis. I did not seek help. A few weeks later, I coughed, vomited and ended up aspirating in my lungs. I also have asthma. That was in November 2012. Since then, I have had 3 episodes of aspiration, two of which required lengthy hospital stays and numerous amounts of medications. I have been on high dose steroids since November......all due to reflux and aspiration.

My case is a bit different here because my reflux was severe enough to affect my lungs. Ialso have a paraesophageal hernia. I am scheduled for NF in the next 12 hours. My surgery could not wait.

Please go see a doctor immediately. If youre having vomiting that is severe, you could easily aspirate. You can't control the coughing. And yes, ice cream was a huge, huge trigger.

Good luck and keepus posted.
