Do you have reflux in particular heartburn, chestpain all day everyday or do you find you can have a good week and then a horrendously painful week and then good again?
Also, does everybody with severe reflux get regurgitation in to your mouth?
I'm very curious as to how similar/different I am to people.

I look forward to your answers.

Hi Mol,
I'm kinda new to the forum too. I'm planning on getting the Nissen done in a month. My reflux varies. If I'm really good about mitigating my heart burn (sleeping with my shoulders raised, not drinking coffee or wine, etc) then I usually just feel a light burning or gnawing in my chest several times throughout the day. If I don't watch my behavior, I can have severe episodes that make it difficult to eat. The pain can be so intense that it hurts to breathe.

Normally, I belch several times a day. I will sometimes regurgitate, usually when the reflux is worse. My burps often taste metallic.

Are your symptoms similar?

Hi Gooserstein,

Yeah, you sound very similar to how I was. Oddly though, I get relief when lying down ( think it maybe because the pain is so tiring!!).

Glad to hear you're having the Nissen I had mine nearly 4 months ago and the relief was amazing. The recovery is really not as bad as people make it sound either.

Unfortunately my post op barium swallow showed that the wrap has slipped but not sure I believe them :-) I find out properly next week!!

How long have you been suffering?

I get reflux a lot, but I usually don't see a correlation to meal times or food in general. There are a few big triggers I've found, like citric acid in oranges and for some reason apples. With the exception of large meals, I often have reflux continually throughout the day and night, with the occasional spikes here and there. Sometimes I'll get acid or food all the way up into my mouth, but that's rare during the day.

When I get reflux the most is when I exercise. My LES is so weak that any type of strenuous activity shoots acid straight up my throat, choking and burning me. I get this the most when I do anything associated with running, but now I get this even from climbing a staircase. Because of this, I have basically become inactive and really struggle to climb staircases, as it takes me at least a minute to catch my breath most times.
