I have been wanting to post a new topic on chronic burping. I'm so interested in knowing if anybody else has this problem. I burp probably 100 + times a day. I burp many times after meals, after coughing or talking. I even burp when I put my feet on the floor in the morning and if my stomach gets to empty! I believe over the years my burping problem has actually caused LPR and reflux issues. I cough and clear my throat a lot after meals. I also have generalized anxiety and have wondered many times if this is why I burp so much. My ENT/Gastro feels that the burping is causing reflux and irritating my throat and even my lungs at this point. Forgot to mention my asthma. I've seen many docs as mentioned above and have had many test. All they say is "Aerophagia". I saw a reflux surgeon that also diagnosed hernia and loose LES. I'm the anxious one on this forum when It comes to surgery due to my burping problem. I was wondering if anybody has had reflux surgery with a prior excessive burping problem?

Yes. 100% have a similar issue. I can literally feel myself reflexively swallowing air back down after each burp, so i always have that bloated feeling. It makes me crazy!

I've never had surgery, but recently tapered off of PPIs to take a break and see what my baseline is. My burping is off the charts. 100+ times a day too. It's ridiculous.

It took having my surgery for me to realize how much I was burping before. 120+ times as recorded on my 24 hr pH study. After surgery, a few burps a day. I am still dealing with other issues but they are detailed in my thread.

I've read that burping is from swallowing air. I swallowed no more air before surgery than I do now, yet my burping has all but disappeared.

drtinsac,

What surgery did you have and what problems are you having now?

speedygerd,

I agree, it is ridiculous! My docs have warned me that surgery could cause a lot of gas bloat. What have your docs said about this problem?

My constant burping gradually diminished as I followed the Fast Tract diet. I stayed on this diet for about two months. Now I eat pretty normally, and take TUMS only occasionally. It is a low carb and lower fiber diet that limits foods that are most difficult to digest. I still burp sometimes, but a huge amount less. The burping is due to gas build up from those difficult to digest foods. The gas pushes up the stomach contents, sometimes causing heatrburn. First thing in the morning was worst for me for the burping though at that time there is nothing in my stomach to push up. There are more details about Fast Tract on a separate thread here.

Thats very interesting. I will definitely look into this diet. however, with me it seems to be worse right after eating almost as if I'm swallowing to much air in with my food. But I do feel my body doesn't process carbs very well. As I said before to, I am a person of high anxiety and have wondered if this may also be a source of my burping pronlem.

Teeth cleaner...any answers to your burping issue? This was happening to me about 100 times a day (literally out of nowhere one day)....now down to about 25 or so per day but I cannot figure out why. Normal endoscopy, normal abdominal ultrasound. GI says stress and anxiety, I don't buy that. Any ideas?

I too burp right after eating a lot. Like you guys said, 100's of times a day. The PPIs make it non-acidic but it's still regurgitation that is bothering my LPR and my Sinuses (at least I think it's bothering my sinuses).

I have had all the tests and have appointments with 2 surgeons in the Austin area. One for Robotic LNF and one for tradition LNF surgery.

I also second that less carbs causes less burping for me. I definitely have a difficult time digesting carbs.

I was on Dexilant 60mg 1x a day and now down to 1 prilosec and 2 zantac. Hoping to taper down to 1 prilosec and 1 zantac and more close to surgery. The lower PPI dose allows me to specifically see what foods (or stress) causes reflux. But if my eating gets out of hand (really too much junk or processed food) I pay for it. Coffee KILLS me but Alcohol in moderation (Clear spirits) seem to be less of an issue.

I have tried the fast tract but not super strict. I would probably tighten that up even more closer to potential surgery.

dmarie725,

Burping after meals and throughout the day is still a big problem for me. It is causing a lot of LPR symptoms such as throat clearing, heavy mucous, coughing and burning in my mouth. My testing is not showing a lot of reflux coming up so my last motility specialist said absolutely no surgery because he said I would be miserable with gas bloat. Nobody has answers for this puzzling condition other than anxiety, stress aerophagia! But deep down I feel it is related to a form of reflux that is not typical. It makes so much sense to me that if the LES was tight or functioning properly it would be able to handle the air pressure from normal eating and drinking. But as soon as I drink or eat anything here comes the burps one after the other! It's exhausting with no answers! I've seen 3 Motility specialist and they all advised me against surgery!

Hi Wendy, sorry you are having these problems. Can you advise how to find a motility specialist? Is that GI doc? My GI doc looked at my Ph and Manametry tests and just sent me to a surgeon. I'd like to discuss more in-depth my motility and Ph tests with a specialist.

PaleoPop,

I googled GI motility specialist in my area (Alabama). I then got 2nd and 3rd opinions from a specialist in Atlanta Georgia and Lastly, Vanderbilt Tennessee where I saw Michael Vaezi. Let me know if i can be any more help to you! This is a horrible condition that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy!

Hmm, I'm very perplexed. Can you have a weak LES but NOT have any feelings of reflux heartburn? I feel like I'm just burping air all the time. What kind of test can show if the LES is weak? It sounds like you guys are all burping more than me at this point. Should I even be concerned about an average of 20-25 per day? This still seems way too much considering I never used to burp before. I'm actually starting to get scared that it's something serious and not sure what to think...

What do you guys think?

dmarie725,

I would advise several opinions from GI/Motility specialist to
see if reflux is involved with your burping. They can do several
test which are not comfortable but necessary to determine if you
actually have a reflux problem or a weakened LES. The test I highly recommend is the ph/impedance study and a motility study.
After these test you will have a pretty good idea whats
going on and the treatment necessary to help you.
In my case I didn't have a lot of reflux coming up
with my burping so surgery is not recommended! However, I
do feel like I have more reflux coming up than was found
on my testing due to my bad LPR Symptoms. As for now I'm
just dealing with my symptoms the best that I can.

In my experience this is something that onsets almost immediately. I went from being fine one day to burping many times after meals. A weakened Sphincter is most likely the cause of this.

If you aren't on PPI's I would recommend taking a HCL with Pepsin supplement. This has drastically reduced burping for me. Makes sure food doesn't ferment and passes it through quickly.

theyuw....how does a weakened sphincter just occur? do you think this could be my issue (would it be a weak LES)? I have no feelings of heartburn, reflux/acid or any type of regurgitation, just lots of burping air. it's worse after eating or drinking anything, but still occurs without eating. in fact, i burp as soon as i get out of bed in the morning. it's starting to worry me that something serious is going on.

could it be possible to just one day have a weakened LES, only have belching with no other classic symptoms? i had an endoscopy which was normal...i know that i swallow saliva A LOT but i'm still having a hard time believing that is the main cause for this belching...

thoughts/input appreciated!!

i also want to add that when i take a sip of anything (just one sip)...within a minute or so i need to burp. it's as though my stomach can't take the sip (or air that's coming in with it). this NEVER used to happen before ever! what do you think?

I had a terrible belching problem for years. I would burp so much that my throat would swell. I have found something that works for me. I take 2 tsp of Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar in about 4 oz of water every morning and every night after dinner. The burping subsided almost immediately. I'm not saying this is a solution for everyone but it definitely worked for me. If you have some in your house, give it a try. It does taste horrible.

i have excessive burping from 6 months now. It's awful.yeah i also think carbs make it worse, so does anxiety. I have constant hyperventilation perhaps this causes more air swallowing. And burping is perhaps irritating my throat. Sometimes i get the feeling that air is trapped inside my throat and esophagus
