I noticed some of you talk about alcohol I am so nervous about everything after surgery. I was wondering about this what did you drink and what where your symptoms if any and what kind of drinks did you have? I know it sounds sick but after all of this I really could use a glass of wine or a drink

Hi Tarachriso,
I had my surgery four years ago, and for the life of me, I can't remember exactly how when I had my first drink post op.  I do remember that in the beginning I was very careful, trying a small amount to see if I could tolerate it, and going from there.
I do know that I was drinking beer at around the 4 month mark, as we went on vacation.  I was concerned that beer would be a no-no due to carbonation, but felt comfortable drinking it because an acquaintance who had the surgery a few years before me told me that beer was fine, as it has "natural carbonation", unlike soda.  I didn't drink soda for a long time, but do drink it now.  I'm not a huge soda drinker, but I'll have two or three glasses of it when out with no trouble.
I did have a bad bloat problem after drinking two glasses of champagne to celebrate my son's engagement.  I guess champagne carbonation is just too aggressive.
So take it slow and gradual until you know what you can tolerate.  Good luck!

I drank at 10 weeks post, but only had two drinks. One glass of beer and one glass of wine. I'm three months post now and can drink anything, but I do limit it to three drinks. I still have heartburn though, but my heartburn is not caused by having a drink, my heartburn started right after surgery.

I was told to only have a liquid/soft diet and stay off alcohol until my 6 week post-op reveiw with my surgeon.

On the review day the surgeon told me I was OK to eat and drink normally again. That night I had a 14" pizza and 6 pints of beer (bitter in the uk which isn't as fizzy as lager).

I had no problems whatsoever and boy did they go down well!

Fair to say that I have't looked back since.

My six weeks post NF are up next Thursday and we will be going on vacation. During that week I plan on eating well-chewed, controlled amounts of Cuban food in Sarasota and having a Mojito. It is an annual tradition......otherwise I don't drink at all....

Thank you for the response I have been taking such baby steps all though out this and I am just so nervous to mess anything up. I do not wish to ever revisit that life that I had before the surgery because if it continuied that why Im not sure how much of a life I would have had left. Thank you.

Ok, so being honest I chickened out I was afraid. I will maybe try again this weekend. I don't know what I think will happen but I am afraid of what could.
