Just some food for thought...... When you have a 24hr ph test done it show's xx number of reflux events (on meds). Now, ppis only lower acid in the stomach as they don't stop reflux events. So if you had a 24hr ph done (off meds) wouldn't the results be the same? Point being, if you're in the acceptable range (reflux events) on meds, what would be the point of taking meds as your reflux events would be acceptable range off meds.

It seems ppl have more non-acid reflux events on meds. This seems to support the idea that pepsin/bile are more concentrated when taking ppi's.

That's what I found through my PH impedence exams. I refluxed more non acid while on the medication. Hence why I don't see the point of taking medication when I'm actually refluxing more on them! Silly doctors...
From my own experience I can tell my stomach is more active when I'm on PPI's Or h2's. I get more nausea and discomfort in my stomach as a result.

The doctor at UW-health that I went to said that taking PPI would lower the overall gastric contents, which he strongly believed would lower the overall amount of reflux, even if your suffering from mostly non-acid reflux. Having less contents in your stomach results in less reflux...but apparently that's not the case. It seems at least in my case, the non acid reflux went up by 11 events, while the number of acid events stay the same on and off meds.

Sometimes I think they play on words, saying you will reflux less on ppi's. It's not that you will have less reflux events, it's that you will reflux less contents from less acid. Now there's were the pepsin/bile become more damaging because they become more condensed in the absence of acid, hence stronger and or more non-acid reflux events. That would explain why I have typical symptoms off meds and atypical symptoms on meds.

I agree with you guys like ppi for non acid reluxers does not really erase or ease our symptoms because bile and pepsin is our enemy and they come up regardless so acid being produced or not produced does not make difference, that's why after all my tests such as my 24hr probe and Barrium that i have done, i hope i do not get any ppi as treatments, because I will tell them how they made me feel worse when I used to be on them but sometimes it helps other people so everyone is different but it's not for me I have one prob & I do not need more probs such as the ppi give me

Reflux can have specific triggers. It is not necessarily related to acid.

I got rid of my stomach refluxing - spasming contents upward - by eliminating my food triggers. My allergist had me keep a good food journal which helped us diagnose the foods that caused the events. I still had a valve problem, but the worst of the reflux and all the pain went away.

Before I found the trigger foods I had a reflux event that triggered my vagus nerve, which sent my heart arteries into vasospasm, causing a heart attack. (cardioesophageal reflex aka linked angina)

Alice: wow so foods can trigger the nerves? how does that work? are you doing better now? see I want to keep a food journal but I do not know exactly what to look for, because I barely get heartburn anymore I think I am off the rebound stage now from the ppi's but it's the silent part i have to worry about I feel like every time i burp I have something come up back but I do ot know what it could be pepsin/bile. and how did you know you had valve problem? I want to know if my valve's are working correctly, I really wonder what's causing the LPR in me because I do not have haitial hernia so I am wondering if mine is nerve or weak valve, but I do not know how to rule out a weak valve prob so I can tell if it's nerve.

Sometimes having a food allergy or intolerance can cause gerd symptoms. Gerd journals are definitely helpful, I know I have to stay away from dairy because it makes me worse. It usually makes me burp which causes my symptoms to be worse.

Yeah I agree with you six, I really need to work on my diet, i have no idea where to start it's hard giving up some good foods, I find myself cheating ALL the time and waking up with more of white coated tounge and mucus in my throat. I really should handle mine now since I am at the earliest of earliest stages, newest symptoms dry mouth and hoarse voice once month it will have these episodes out of no where. I really do hope within the next years LPR gets some kind of new break through before I cave into surgery. Because I always say to myself if it gets to that point surgery so I can get my life back. Hahaha. anyways on important news I hope you had good day I know I did it was my mom's bday and like we talked about yesterday enjoy life which I did today so god bless from that. :)
How is your diet now are you following the koufman diet? low fat, low acid, gluten free, & dairy free?

pink,
I've had better results on the fast track then I did on the koufman. I tried the koufman for several months but I'm only a few weeks into the fast track.

DOGG: hey :)
how are you feeling, and oh really? I am still doing the koufman and seeing it how it goes, I mean my symptoms are so mild right now but I want to prevent anymore damages without the med, I swear I feel like the meds are not doing it for me when i was on them, how are you doing with the diet on the meds? and are u gluten free/dairy free? hope you are doing better, me and you have to beat this naturally before we cave in back to the meds, i just ordered gavisocn advance for my night time refluxing because i think that's something I can not heal. I mean I do not have any symptoms during night but i know I reflux worse at night because the lump in the throat and mucus is worse in the morning. are you taking gaviscon or anything?

The (US) gaviscon doesn't do much for me, I do like the (UK) gaviscon as it works better but you destroy the "raft" as soon as you consume anything.

Yeah I know, I just got mine from amazon, where did you get yours? I hope i am taking the right one but anyways I mainly take mine for nighttime because I feel like during the day I can combat my LPR symptoms but not nighttime since we are leaving it unguarded, its so THICK haha do you take yours after meals?

How are your symptoms?
the sour taste for me disappeared (started drinking alkaline water recommended by koufman and saw a dramatic change when it came to this and since I cut out the sugars) maybe it comes and goes?, it's the weird bumps and little bit of whiteness of in back my tongue and the bumps and redness of course (maybe the pepsin?) hahaha I do not know what to eat lol , and minor heartburn here and there manageable but afraid of it getting worse.

pink,
I don't think you can buy the UK version of gaviscon from amazon. The UK version creates a "raft" and is called gaviscon advanced. I ordered mine from chemist.com in the UK.

Gonna answer the other question here,
carafate how do you get that? is it over the counter or prescribed? yeah my gastritis is long gone now thank god, and lol I know coffee is so addicting but dr. koufman said 1 cup wont hurt, I was never coffee drinker i liked the taste with al the creme and sugar haha. Amazon does sell the UK Gaviscon and so does Ebay. Carafate is a prescribed medication
