I live in Ireland, and as much as I love the country (moved here almost 7 years ago), the public health service is a joke. You often have to wait for up to a year to see a specialist. I got to see an ENT after a few months due to a cancellation, but he was not very helpful, he recommended staying on the PPI and see a speech therapist for my voice issues and swollen vocal chords. Now waiting for an appointment with a speech therapist.
I have had issues for 9 months now, but it only got really bad last December. It alls started with a cough that became chronic, inhalers prescribed by my GP didn't touch it. Then I developed swallowing difficulties, coughing fits that woke me up from sleep, started to burp/belch all the time, had a constant sore throat, sour taste in my mouth, pressure on checst/upper abdomen etc. I was put on PPIs, omeprazole did not help me at all and caused a total loss of appetite for me. When I lost almost 10 punds within two weeks I was scoped (opted to use my private health insurance with co-payment for that), but there was nothing sinister going on and I was just given a leaflet on acid reflux. So I adjusted my diet and tried esomeprazole, which helped a bit more, but I got bad side effects from it and had to switch to panto, which workd much better for me without too many side effects.
My symptoms are a lot better, I only cough when I don't watch my diet (fruit is a big no-no for me, apart from melons and bananas, so are fatty meats). My sore throat is also much better and I don't burp as often as I did a few months ago.
The swallowing difficulties have remained, and I have lots of voice issues, I often get hoarse and my voice is often strained and weak, which is not ideal when I have to train colleagues in my job or when I go out to pubs. Was out with friends last night, talking over loud music, and my voice is in an awful state today.
Diet-wise I have taken a leaf out of the Koufman diet and eat as low-fat/low-acid as possible. I still have some fats (goats cheese, avocado, oily fish, occasionally nuts and seeds) as I am still underweight from my weight loss a few months ago and don't want to lose more weight.
I don't eat anything spicy, no alcohol, juice, coffee, chocolate, onion (onions are killing me!), garlic, tomato, peppers and so on. I will allow myself to have a treat now and then, some cake or low-fat ice cream. I eat lots of veg, fish, poultry, lean beef, potatoes, bananasa, melon, oatmeal, rice and so on. Obviously I would love to have a drink or two when I go out or have a bit of chocolate here and there, but what can you do. Right now strawberries are in season and the thought of not being able to have any is quite depressing...
Have you thought about switching to a different PPI? As you can see, it took me a few attempts to find one that agreed with me and actually helped.
Maybe you could also try DGL, manuka honey and slippery elm, I found manuka honey very soothing for my throat and slippery elm powder good for my stomach (slippery elm should only be taken a few hours before or after you take your PPI though).
