I am about 10 weeks post op NF. Yesterday I picked up some furniture from a shop ( which they loaded in my truck for me). On the way home the furniture was shifting in the bed of the truck. I climbed up in the back of the truck, shifted the furniture and retied the ropes. Last night I woke up in severe pain and I noticed some small bumpy swelling and real tenderness in the center of my abdomen. I had an open procedure, so I have the large incision, the tenderness is in the middle of the incision.

I had been feeling great. I have returned to my water aerobics class and was probably overconfident in my strength and ability. I am worried that I have torn a stitch in the wrap or messed up something internally. I have felt terrible all day and I am just laying low. Oh yeah, I did try to go to water aerobics this morning, I had to leave, it was too painful.

What do I need to watch for? Should I be concerned?

I don't believe you would have done anything to the wrap, but I am concerned about the bumpy area. Is that on your incision line? If so please contact your surgeon as it may be the start of a hernia.

It sounds like you've herniated you incision. Get checked out soon to make sure the herniated portion is not cut off from blood flow. This can be fixed and may take another smaller surgery. Sometimes it can be reduced into the abdomen. You nissen should be fine. I'm a ARNP student and have seen this with many open surgeries.

I agree with Goose. I have the start of a hernia on my open incision from lifting incorrectly. My muscles are starting to pull apart on the outside. I just have to keep an eye on it and make sure I lift correctly.

Take care,
