I started with gastritis and very mild gerd about a year ago. LPR was my first gerd related symptom, full on heartburn started about 9 months ago I reckon.

It was misdiagnosed as anxiety as my heart was going haywire at this point which was worrying me (doctors!) but as a result of them essentially blaming me for the symptoms, and them never going away, I did develop full blown anxiety and then depression. When I came off ppi's to have an endoscopy 7 months ago my gastritis and gerd got 10x worse. But at least the endoscopy confirmed gastritis and a hiatus hernia. I am pretty sure that the hiatus hernia was caused by the amount of pain from my stomach and abdonimal tension from the constant curling up in agony.

Its only been a year but it feels like a lifetime, it has completely changed my life

Oh, about 20 years, but good to go now with an intact wrap.

Take care,

I had my first attack at around age 20. They didn't know what it was. Throat issues.
That was 25 years ago.
Some of my earliest memories are me having throat issues very young. At night I'd wake up with a choking sensation. As I grew up and watched Vietnam films I always thought to myself, "if there ever was reincarnation I was killed in Vietnam by being shot in the throat. Weird, I know. But this took place 35 to 40 years ago. Here I am today at age 45 with Barrett's. had it ablated. So technically, I don't have it. But I do. So, I probably was a baby with GERD. It just wasn't diagnosed in those days.

Most of my life. As an infant they called it collic but it's pretty clear to my mom now that I was suffering from severe reflux. I have a birth defect (essentially an extra tube in my esophagus) so GERD issues are just my life. My symptoms started in my early twenties. I thought I was having heart issues and developed anxiety. Took years for any doctor to suggest GERD. I've had LPR issues ( lump in throat, feeling food stuck, esophageal spasms and waking chocking) for 11 years but my burning didn't start until 2010-2011 during my second pregnancy.

I've been diagnosed and seeing doctors for about 5 years, but I have had symptoms my entire life. Still only 18, so I haven't been around long enough to compete with most of your numbers.

12 years GERD, 12 years PPIs.

Scheduled surgery for earlier in the year but backed out because I manage okay (but not great) on PPIs. Still thinking about a Nissen or LINX.

Have cut my ppi dose in half for the past 1 1/2 month in an attempt to ween off and treat symptoms naturally.

I would say about 12+ years with GERD, 8 years on PPIs. 5 months on H2-blockers.

Slowly getting better but sometimes I think I'll never be back to medication free. H2-blockers are better than PPI's though.

Edit:
Forgot to add that I have probably had LPR symptoms for a few years. I know that I would need to clear my throat quite often. The past 8 months I've had more LPR symptoms show up though.

I had experience my first heartburn 7 yrs ago, but very rare at that time. Just some gas. Then 3 yrs ago I was often bloated and burping! I didn't know that I already had an issue.
My first medication started last month, april-- where I have shortness if breath, cough, upset stomach, bloating, back pain, burping, and more. I didn't know back then that I had an issue and I think that's why it got bad..

I had the same issues. It all started from meds. The meds helped other issues... Then more meds got piled up,the next thing u know more issues, never clearing the stomach acid issues even with RX for acid indigestion.

So after decreasing one med and changing another plus sleeping in a sitting position & no food after 7 pm. & a better diet... Five months later it's gone. I was lucky. My friend had it for years . Every yr for several yrs the throat and tummy checks were good. It too finally went away. Basically stomach acid comes up he esophagus can be serious . Acid foods, coffee and meds on empty tummy all contributed.

I was so worried when I first experience the shortness of breath and back pain Last April. But I choose to change my diet right away, coz I don't want to suffer and take medication for years. Right diet seems to be so effective. My symptoms disappear one by one, lesser by lesser. I don't burp a lot anymore, no more lump in my throat, no more shortness of breath, just a little cough and little back pain. I really dont know why the back pain comes on and off, it's kind of muscular pain and not that painful. But it still worries me sometimes. But we should not worry that much, as worry always makes everything worse.

I always read from other people with gerd that they've been in hell for couple of years or longer, that makes me feel kind of worried. But still, whenever Im feeling an improvement, I become more determined to continue my lifestyle changes. It does not only help with the healing of gerd, but also help our other body issues and health. Healthy diet also prevent us from having other diseases.

I am by the way a 26yrs old female, 5'1" in height and 101lbs. I'm short, and I think I'm slightly overweight.
