I just want to share my story with those who suffer heartburn as I'm concerned how so many people could have heartburn for years and still haven't found a cure for it.
I've heartburn symptom for 2 months now and had been on 3 rounds of medication because during medication the symptom was less but after completion of medicine the symptom came back: zantac and antacid for 5 days; zantac and antacid for 2 weeks; PPI and digestion pills for 10 days.
I decided not to visit the dr first and to try lifestyle and diet changes to regulate my stomach acid production because I do not believe acid inhibitors are the answer for my problem, and I bought Gaviscon for standby purpose (it's supposed to put a coating to prevent esophagus from burning). I lifted my mattress to prevent the acid from burning my esophagus when I sleep and I stopped eating at night after 8pm. If I felt heartburn at night, I will take Gaviscon and it kind of settles the acid from coming up in about
half an hours time, only then I go to bed. In the morning, I ate porridge, sometimes with some minced garlic in it. I would never eat the garlic on its own anymore because it burns like hell esp on empty stomach! I'm sure garlic helps to subside my symptom but still am not sure if it would cure heartburn completely. I stopped eating when I felt just nice and I do not stuff my stomach full. The rest of the meals I ate easy-to-digest food. And i eat frequent small meals, like 3 hours once. Sometimes after 2 hours, when I feel hungry.
I took care of my posture and try not to slouch especially when reading from my iPad. Slouching is really really bad for heartburn. I don't wear bra whenever possible.
I figured whenever I had anxiety, the heartburn symptom appeared. Oh yeah I forgot to mention I'm under a very stressful situation, trying to find solution for my work-related problem for the past 6 months. I found this article which describes my thoughts perfectly well and now I'm trying to change the way I think - think less and feel more!
I write this not because I have completely cured my heartburn but I like the feeling that I'm having control over it now and the symptom is much lesser now - sometimes I didn't get it for the full whole day (i used to have it everyday). Hopefully, in time to come, it will be rid off completely. So guys, don't depend on medication so much, it is you and your lifestyle including your mental health that need change. Honestly, for me, with or without medication is the same. When i was on medication, my symptoms didn't go off completely as they always come back once the effect of the med is gone. Now that i'm off medication, I actually feel more in control. I'm now officially 7 days off med and hopefully it gets better.
