Hi all,

I need to know if anyone has had experience here. I am freaking out! I have been having a bad attack for about 6-7 weeks. I had some "winter weight" (about 20 pounds, yes, real pounds that have put me over a healthy BMI) i need to loose, which I lost 10 of at the beginning of the attack due to hardly being able to eat. I am trying to control this attack with diet changes, so I am basically eating paleo (what little I do get down). I have only eaten after 7:00 pm 2 or 3 times. I have been tracking what I eat to try to pin point why the weight gain. I am eating 1000-1300 cals per day. I would love to eat more, I just can't. I am stuffing myself to get that in. I drink only water, except 2 cups of coffee (my one vice I just don't want to give up). I did start on Protonix about 6 days ago, but I haven't taken it every day. The weight stall/gain started 3 weeks ago. I went to the Primary care Doc and all bloodwork/ultrasound looks good. She referred me to my GI doc. I made an appointment with him for tomorrow. I don't remember him being too helpful last time I was there (Just wants to medicate forever). I am happy to cut out whatever I need to cut out. I more concerned with ending the GERD issue than the weight, but I certainly don't want to be gaining! And I don't want to be on meds forever if this is something that can be controlled with diet. Please please someone advice here

mladiann - I have the opposite problem. I am losing weight. I am trying to eat healthy but am losing weight faster than I should - 10 pounds in last 3-4 weeks. I called my GI and they did not show that taking protonix shows a decrease in weight - however many on this board have this losing weight issue.

What I have observed from my readings is that each one of us is different. I think as you control your diet and protonix kicks in you may start to lose weight. Good luck.

What does your typical daily diet consist of?

Right now it's mostly fruit and veggies with lean protein or almonds a couple times a day. I've cut out all sweets except 4 tsp of honey or cane sugar in tea. Almost no dairy anymore. Thanks for the help! I went to the GI doc today and he is testing me for celiac, scanning gall bladder a more detailed way, and doing an upper and lower GI on Monday. It's not the thyroid or gall stones. Red and white blood feel counts are all good. He is puzzled, too.

I would think that your GI would conduct a whole battery of tests to rule out the cause of your pain-- that's usually a given. I know you like your coffee, but any GI will tell you that coffee is one of the worst beverages for GERD. You may need to change meds. Your GI can direct you to the right treatment. Good luck. Feel better.

Instead of a couple times a day you might try small meals a few rimes a day. I have been told eating about 6 very small meals helps to keep the body from going into starvation mode and storing any fat it can. When I eat about a 1/2 cup 6 to 8 times a day I lose weight slowly and when I eat larger meals once or twice I tend to gain weight.

Take care,
Bill

Ps. Do you eat the veggies with anything on them?
