Hi, I am new to this. I had Barrett's and had it ablated about 4 months ago. Ppi's never ever really work well. Although my old heartburn symptoms are gone but I have throat issues that started last year when I was put on ppi's.
I went to ENT 4 different times and two docs. Finally one saw that I had allergies and gave me astepro nasal steroid. Wow, it really took way 80 percent of my throat issues. My throat issues are mainly back of my mouth and throat and nasal area. But it's hard to say exactly where as the pain can radiate.
Does anyone else think there allergies are related to acid reflux? I also get very bad dry mouth which can be a cause.
The nasal steroid is a huge relief. I think I will get the shots and see if they don't take care of the rest of my throat issues. Sometimes I think I am allergic to the ppi's........

Refluxmd.com had a good article on esopagatis plus I googled it and it did mention that Barrett's can be caused by this.

You might visit a gastroenterologist to see if you are having reflux. He can prescribe a barium swallow which could show if there is any food coming back up into the esophagus or if the esophagus is moving properly.

I would also see an allergist to get allergy testing. I would rather get treated with shots to stop the allergies than take steroids. You might also try antihistamines to see if they will control the allergies.

Not necessarily so..... I've had allergies life long, diagnosed formally at the age of 20. Food allergies, mould allergies, pollen, pets etc etc. I had no reflux or stomach issues whatsoever until 25 years later!!

Mom, not sure what you are referring too.
Also, I am not taking steroids but an antihistamine. Astepro. Takes a minimum of 80 percent of my throat irritation away. Makes me think this was all allergies but I have Barrett's and do reflux.

I was responding to "allergies equal acid reflux" - they can be related but I was saying they can also be entirely separate issues.

I felt better within an hour and then things got better each day. 80 percent better. However, foods do set it off. So does dust and mold. I went on a 56 mile hike last summer and wrecked my system. I have never been the same. I weekend myself and the allergies kicked my butt . At the same time I was diagnosed with Barrett's so the anxiety and fear set set in and made it all worse. For me, it is appearing to be allergies me reflux. I think the reflux aggravates my allergies or vice versa. Perhaps, astepro helps with throat irritation from reflux. I would love to hear from others. Antihistamine helping throat irritation from a combo of reflux and allergies. I do know I reflux as I had bad one last night, woke up coughing and throat on fire. Today it is not so good but the histamine took most of the pain away. But not all. Just enough to worry me and let me know there is more thn just allergies. But they do play a role.
