Hi all, psyched to have found this site.

I was dx'd with GERD a few years back and was on Prilosec for well over a year, 20 - 40 mgs a day. I started snapping my ankles and wrists regularly, and lo and behold, my primary told me it was due to long term Prilosec use causing me to be 44% higher at risk for fractures. So, I weaned off the Prilosec. With the help of a homeopathic type of chiro I see regularly, I was introduced to Standard Process supplements, and in less than 2 months, they addressed all my gastic upsets.

The last month or so, I have begun to have constant regurgitation, a lump in my throat, difficulty swallowing and constant and very upset stomach. There is stress in my life (like everyone's!) and I do enjoy a few cocktails (self medication, I know...) and I know this contributes.

However, this gerd stuff lately is practically debilitating. It is so constant that I cannot stop being aware and uncomfortable from it.

I have a call into my gastro doc, who advised me to go back on the Prilosec 40 mg in the am on empty stomach and eating 1/2 hour later, which I started today, begrudgingly. I am highly aware of what I can and cannot eat and am doing my best to abide by what my body tells me, altho, to be honest, giving up the alcohol completely seems like a big hurdle with the issues going on (kids, marriage, farm life, rescue animals). I am waiting to see if doc wants to see me; I did have an endoscopy last year that was basically fine. I am also going to a new primary internal doctor for the first time next week, and hoping she may have some insight.

I would love to address this all naturally, but at this point, I'll take whatever helps. I just started taking Zantac recently, as well.

So nice to see I'm not alone, but what the heck?!!! It is awful to feel awful all day, not be able to enjoy food, and basically be a hostage to the gurgling in my throat.

Any insights cared to be shared are greatly appreciated!

Well, the hair in my throat feeling, constant burning and irritation in my throat and odd feeling in the middle and upper just above my belly is driving me nuts. I have an appt for my gasto guy. and the doc seemed to piece together multiple symptoms I've had; chronic cough, SO bad that even when I laugh hard now, I sound like I have emphazema (sp), shortness of breath, post nasal drip, voice changes, late onset "asthma", etc. saying the reflux is probably not acid and started way before I was dx'd just recently, relatively. Not sure what he means by that, but I guess I'll find out.
I am now on the Prilosec and Zantac, but water still often make the regurgitation act up, and is non stop.
We are going on a big vaca 5 days after I see the gastro doc. What could they possibly do before we go to alleviate these symptoms?
And why the sudden onset of intense symptoms?
I'd really love to hear any input from others.
very frustrating and depressing...........

Sounds like LPR. Look for the koufman diet threads in the forum. And have an ENT check you out.

Gurgling throat. Interesting, that was a major complaint of mine too. Odd feeling. But, mine stopped just recently when I started astepro nasal antihistamine. I have Barrett's. but it was ablated.
The nasal antihistamine helped so much that I am Getting retested for all allergies and then going to try shots. I see an ENT as well as a GI.
I live on a ranch also. Lots of grass and dust allergies.

I was told antihistamines may help. So, I'm wondering if going to my gastro is going to be a waste. We are going on a vacation just after the fourth, but the thought of it feeling this way almost feels like a waste. Thing is, its the last time hubby will be able to vacation for a long while, so, we are going. I was hoping to be seen and hopefully find out what exactly is going on by the time we leave, but, I'm feeling this is unreasonable at this stage.

The weirdest thing is it seemed to kickstart when I was in GA visiting my son. I made coffee out of the tap instead of the filtered water in the frig, and almost immediately, my throat and stomach reacted. I got Zantac while there, took my Prilosec and was off and on during my visit, but, it just has continued to escalate since I've been home. Even with water.

Has anyone else heard the Prilosec increases risk of fractures?

THANK you for your input. I think I may call an ENT on Monday.

May 25, 2010 -- Popular PPI antacids -- Aciphex, Dexilant, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Vimovo, and Zegerid -- raise the risk of bone fracture, especially when used for a year or more or at high doses, the FDA warns.
