Hi,

For the last 5 days I have hideous pain when eating and sometimes drinking - it's like the food sits on top of my hernia, and I can feel pressure and pain fill up my sternum, the pain was so bad that I spent 6  hours in a&e! I just can't get it to go away, I've upped my ppi's and am taking gaviscon advance after eating - and nothing is touching the pain. Sometimes it can last all day - does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? mad

Hi GC1pink,
Sorry to hear you're in pain.  Is it possible that you have esophagitis?  Before my Nissen surgery I'd get it several times a year.  When it happened, I'd get horrible pain when I ate even a bite of anything.  Smooth and creamy egg custard was the only thing I could handle.

I don't know if that's what it is, but the pain was in the lower esophagus for me as well.  I'd lose 20 pounds during each episode, as I couldn't eat.

Have you called your doc?  It sounds like it's time to see someone.  Carafate suspension is helpful in protecting the inflamed esophagus, if that's what it is.  Upping PPIs and adding Ranitidine at night were helpful, but it always took two to three months to heal.

Good luck!

Hi Dencha,

Did you have acid come up as well as the pain - I just get the pain which pretty much lasts for hours and sometimes all day! It's hideous I've never known anything like this. I'm scheduled for another endoscopy on July 26th but am actually wondering if these are spasms that I'm having as well? I may phone my GP tomorrow for some help.

I'm going to try your egg custard!

I'm due to go on holiday next week, and all I'd like to do is go to bed for a week with an IV of morphine! mad

Hi GC1pink,
I didn't have lots of acid that I was aware of...it always accompanied gastritis, which definitely revved up my reflux.  Reflux was the culprit, though.

It sounds like you might be having spasms.  Do they start less painful, peak at some point, then subside for a bit?

It's tough waiting for appointments, isn't it?!!  If the pain is that bad, by all means call your GP and get some help in the meantime.  He/she might be able to provide you with some help.

Good luck!  Wish I had more to offer!
Take care,
Denise
