Have any of you had any swallowing problems with your hernia? How did the problems get fixed and do you have any advice please.

Thank you :-)

What type of swallowing issues are you having? With reflux strictures can form and cause food to get stuck. Also the esophagus can be weak or have incorrect muscle contractions to move food along.

Take care,

Hi Bill,

Many thanks for your answer. I have today been for another endoscopy - everything looks completely normal, hiatus hernia could not be seen - but it is small and sliding. No gastritis or inflammation but several biopsies have been taken - so that will have to be confirmed.

I then went back to the ward, and as soon as I drank some tea - pain at the les sphincter - then when I swallowed a bit of a sandwich - pain on every bite! I just don't get what's going on at all -and neither do the doctors. This is completely horrible. I think I need to have another barium swallow - to see if anything has changed.

I feel very little reflux at all, if any, it's just pure pain.

Anybody got any clues? mad mad

It's good to hear things look good inside. Depending on how many and where the biopsies were taken that can cause soreness too, but shouldn't last more than a couple days.

I am wondering if you have what is called an hyper sensitive esophagus? Remember the esophagus is basically a "dumb" organ and usually senses any kind of pain or irritation as heartburn. That said, I no longer sense heartburn as I used to before my 1st redo. I now feel it as pain in my left shoulder and spine.

Do you feel the pain right at the bottom of your sternum?

Take care,
Bill

Hi Bill,
My pain is right behind the bottom of my breastbone - and it starts when the food reaches this area - honest to God it's like having multiple knife attacks, then the pain continues for hours. I'm wondering whether the food is getting stuck going through the LES?

On top of this I have costochondritis (rib inflammation) and that just adds to the darn pain. My main Dr is away now until 26th July, and I am off on holiday myself now - I'm going to try to eat soft bland foods all week and see if that helps.

I'm also going to research hyper sensitive esophagus- your information is much appreciated, thank you.
