As per my doctor's suggestion, I started my journey off Nexium. He thinks the PPI medication may be causing some IBS symptoms or SIBO, and wanted me to try an H2 Blocker. Knowing what I know about PPI medications, I decided to ween off the PPI onto the H2 Blocker. I have been afraid to start weening  for fear of rebound. I have been taking an OTC Zegrid once a day and gaviscon at night for 4 days now, and I am doing ok. I plan on staying on the OTC Zegrid for a few weeks, possibly a month before I start the pepcid 2 times a day. I am happy that I went from 40mg Nexium down to an OTC 20mg Zegrid, as I have been on a prescription PPI for too many years. I will keep everyone posted.

Erica. Keep us posted on how you are doing. You are very brave. Wish you the best on getting down and hopefully eventually off.

Good luck. I managed to get off the ppi this past spring. I was not on it as long as you were, but I was on a higher dose. My best advice is to take it slow.....and keep us posted.

Thanks everyone. I am hopeful about this. I really do think the years on a PPI has messed with my digestive system, but I am determined to get it back on track.

Hi,your doing the right thing Erica getting off the ppis, their are poison in my opinion.I stopped nexium 4 months ago and started Ranitidine 150mg morning and 150 at night and im doing not to bad.I still have some side effects but nowhere near as bad as on nexium. I did feel quite ill for about two months or so but struggled on and I settled down.
Hope everything goes well and you can get by on an h2 blocker.Barry

Thanks Doggbones and Barry! I think I will be ok if I ween off. It is a good sign that I feel ok going from 40mg of Nexium to OTC Zegrid 20 mg. I may have to switch to prilosec so I can brak the pills in half (zegrid is capsals and I am not sure what Prevacid is) to continue the ween or just try and see how I do from zegrid to pepcid.
