Does anyone take anything like this for the lump in the throat? I have been on ativan 4 months and its the only thing that helps but my ENT would rather have a psychiatrist continue the prescription.  I feel very humiliated by this considering it was doctors who gave me the prescription in the first place.

lobstahguy, I take ativan but mainly because my anxiety goes out of control when my GERD/gastritis symptoms flare up.

If ativan is the only thing that helps the lump in throat, I would think that your globus is indeed related to anxiety. So I could see why the ENT does not want to continue to prescribe an anti-anxiety drug that can also be addictive.

Chris,    i actually woke up out of the blue with the lump in throat while i had a Bravo probe attached to my esophagus.  I thought it was a cricopharyngeal spasm at first and still wonder if it is because ativan is supposed to be a diagnostic tool for a CS.  However my ENT discovered that my vocal folds are swollen either from LPR or irritable larynx and i can feel this swelling and without the ativan it is unbearable.  I end up swallowing constantly which makes my esophagus sore.  I think its 75% physical and 25% anxiety related.  I do know that the acid blockers just made everything worse so im hoping it will go away with lifestyle changes and time.

How often do you take the ativan?

Hey!  I hopped over to this board to ask another question, but saw this thread and thought I would answer as well.  I am usually on the anxiety board.

I have that sensation and have for 19 years.  My tongue also feels weird (crampy like) and I feel strange under my chin.  I also have problems initiating a swallow, like the ability to swallow just disappears.

My doctor and I tried many medicines for several years and I finally asked him for an RX for klonopin (same class as you take).  It was the only thing that helped.  I have been on klonopin for the better part of 10 years (I stopped during both pregnancies and nursing the babies, so 27 months off for the first child and 27 months off for the 2nd child.  It was strange because when I was pregnant and/or nursing, I didn't have the sensation as strong as it normally is.

I'm sorry this is happening to you.

Gbaby, do you take it everyday?? I am taking between 2.25 and 3 mg of ativan everyday to deal with the lump in the throat. Whenever i try to wean down lower i cant do it, but i am hoping that in time i can. I would definitely consider the klonopin longer term if it helps. How bad was this feeling you had? Did you have the lump?? Im glad it helps you

I take half a pill (.5mg) either in the morning if I feel like I need to be calm at work or half a pill at night if I think I am going to need some sleep. Anxiety affects my sleep big time.

I do not take it all the time. Just on as needed basis. The drug definitely helps me but I am afraid to take it long term.

Yes, stay away from it long term. Im in trouble with it and hope i can switch to klonopin or something else, but for now i cant imagine dealing with this swelling in the throat without it.

Hi lobstah,

I take half a pill (0.25 mg) or a full pill (0.5 mg) of Ativan as needed, when I'm having rough anxiety. The anxiety comes because of rough episodes of shortness of breath, or real bad heartburn. I do have globus sensations too, though did not make the connection between globus and Ativan treating it. Interesting. Next time I'll try to notice if the globus feels better when on Ativan.

I realise it's not good to be on Ativan long term, that's why I have weaned myself off taking it daily and ONLY when things get really bad.
