Yes, PPIs are amazingly effective in healing the esophagus (presuming that the problem is caused by acid, not bile). GI docs are quite confident when they prescribe the PPIs, as they have a great track-record for getting things healed up.
Not treating reflux isn't a good option. Have you seen a primary care or GI doc regarding your reflux problems?
Getting medical treatment is important if you have GERD.
