After being told for 14months that I don't have an acid problem - actually I do.

After the barium test today it showed that my hernia has increased to no 2-3cm, and there is reflux. Also my entire oesophagus is in complete spasm and even the barium wouldn't empty properly out of the oesophagus, it was just going up and down!

That would explain why I have had such problems swallowing and the pain in the breastbone is like an elephant sat on my chest stabbing me.

I'm told reflux causes this, and would be very grateful if anyone who's had this could give me some advice.

Thank you.

That sounds miserable. I hope somebody helps you. Has a doctor seen the results yet??

Ouch! Did they mention anything about nutcracker esophagus? I know of this issue, but I am not sure what it really is except that the esophagus doesn't have a correct swallowing function.

With what they saw I can believe your reflux is probably pretty bad.

Take care,

Hi Bill,

The strange thing is that my oesophagus is completely clear of any redness or lesions - nothing there thankfully. The radiographer told me that these spasms can be caused by the reflux. However according to the PH study that was done last December I had no reflux episodes at all! I do appreciate that reflux can change, and I have felt a lot more acid burbling and burping in the last 7 weeks, but I never ever get heartburn and I don't ever feel reflux. However my ENT says I have LPR now.

The trouble is - is it the acid causing the spasms or is it something else? How do you find out?
If it's the acid and I got a surgery would it fix it? or make it worse?

I think I'm in a bit of a pickle!

Have you had a manometry done to check hoe well your swallowing function is?

Take care,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Yes I had a manometry done last year when I had all these chest pains then - it showed a 55% failure rate at 3.0-11.0
normal at 3.0 & 7.0 above les, double peak waves 20%

Of course as I was having the chest pains then - is this an accurate manometry - as before all this started with the IBS and the hernia after a holiday in 2012 - I never had any problems with swallowing anything, or any reflux issues at all.
So I am still back to the same question - is it the reflux causing the spasms or something else - I personally think it's the reflux.

I am now going to have a dual impedance test so we shall find out what is really going on with the acid then.
Must admit, getting very very fed up of it all.

The dual tests should show what is really going on in there.
Take care,
