Hi all. I am jumping over from the anxiety board because I have recently been diagnosed with acid reflux resulting from a barium swallow. Along with this, the pill got stuck in 4 areas. The doc said that I should have an endoscopy and and possible dilation.

So, this leads to my question....my anxiety and panic have most always been related to my swallowing and some chest pain. I've had this swallowing probablem for 19 years, I am now 38.

What does your swallowing problem feel like? Mine takes on a couple of forms. One is classic, where it's hard to get food down sometimes, globeus sensation with tight throat, but the worst one is where it's like I have forgotten how to swallow. Like its neurological and the nerves and muscle just quit in my mouth, with my tongue. It's scary!

My next question is....if you've had the same symptoms as I....did you have the dilation done? Did it fix it? I am terrified that the dilation is just for the food getting stuck and would actually cause further problems with my swallowing reflex, both voluntary and involuntary.

Any insight would be great!

Welcome to the GERD froum.

I had several dilations for strictures in the past. I had the tablet stuck for over 20 minutes and it only went through once it dissolved enough to do so. I have had both symptoms you talk of.

Since you have anxiety, I am wondering what meds you may be taking for this? The reason I ask is because I also have PTSD, anxiety, and depression. 1 of the meds I take causes trouble with swallowing, this is a side effect of Seroquel.

The dilations I had did help with the strictures, but sometimes I needed a 2nd dilation as it came back in a couple weeks, but after the 2nd one it stayed open for a long time. Non of the dilations made the strictures worse for me.

The reflux itself can cause strictures.

Take care,
