Hi. I have an appointment scheduled for a manometry tomorrow and was wondering if anyone ever had sedation and a catheter put in before the manometry. I am probably confused about this. Maybe they are sedating me before putting the manometry catheter in.

Trying not to be nervous about this.

I haven't been sedated for a manometry before, but did have a wired PH probe put in after an EGD while I was still sedated.
It really isn't that bad. You just have to try and relax as much as possible, breathe, and swallow. Usually they have you try to drink through a straw while easing the probe down.

Once you are actually doing the swallows for the test, I found it easier to not do a 2nd swallow by either holding your tongue to the roof of your mouth or hold the tip of your tongue with your teeth. Sounds strange, but it works.

Since it sounds like they mentioned sedating you I would have to say it is just to get th probe in. This would make it a lot easier for you.

Take care,
Bill

Thanks for answering. I have had the manometry and the ph test and wasnt sedated for the manometry but was for the ph wire.

I have swallowing issues because of a nissen wrap the surgeon is thinking is too tight. So maybe there is a possibilty of the manometry probe getting stuck.

I will try to remember to bite my tongue LOL.

mitsie-

The manimetry shouldn't get stuck. It might hang up a bit when they try to get into the LES to check the pressure, but once they have that they do all the other measurements above the LES. I had an overly tight wrap with my 1st nissen and they were able to get into the LES without any problems 3 different times.

Good luck tomorrow.

Take care,
Bill
