So here's my story last December I got a body flu like cold it lasted 4 weeks. then by February a cough began... I woke up coughing choking couldn't catch my breath went to the ER ...they said I was having asthma like symptoms and put me on a nebulizer machine w albuterol. Sent me home w a 10 day dose of prednisone ( steroids) & amoxicillin...
after the 10 days I again flared up.. woke up choking and couldn't breath. This time my pcp said to come to her office. There they put me on the nebulizer machine again. This time sent me home with the nebulizer..flovent & albuterol inhaler and another dose of prednisone. By day 7 I was on my way to the er choking and couldn't breath. This time they admitted me. I was there for 7 days.
They did test after test. Doc was having a hard time diagnosing me. He out of the blue asked if I had been having heartburn.. I was like yes very much...I had noticed the need for tums more than ever the months prior. He then said I was suffering from acid reflux and the acid was bubbling up my esophagus while I was sleeping and down my bronchiol tubes into my lungs giving me COPD which is asthma. They had given me steroids the strongest they had in my IV.. put me on prevacid one in the morning one at night. Zyrtec one a day flovent 2 puffs morning & night. Flonase 2 puffs each nostril at night and albuterol inhaler and more drop ins for the nebulizer machine.
That doc got me feeling better and wanted to see me four weeks insurance was not excepted by his office. So I was left w my pcp. She referred me to an allergy asthma specialist. He did a bunch of allergy tests which all came up negative. He said I was to go off the zyrtec. Upon doing so my lungs flared up. I went back on it myself. Upon doing so I felt better and also got a letter from the same specialist saying to Go off the prevacid . Confused I called. He said i was to go off the zyrtec. I asked about his letter to me.. he argued that he said zyrtec when the letter clearly said prevacid . Realizing that doc was whack I did not see him again.
Months went by with me taking all the above medications and the machine when I would flare up. I then was about to move and needed my meds regulated. I had read the directions of the prevacid and it said not to take it for more than 14 days one tablet a day. I tried to take one a day as directed but experienced great amounts of acid bubbling up the whole day and if at night I would wake up wheezing. I wheez all the time now.
My pcp did nothing except refill all the medications not tappering me off of anything. Now it's august and on all the above except I stopped the Zyertec 6 days ago to start experiencing itchy ears & throat . I have also been nauseous almost every day. Last night I threw up 5 times along w diarrhea. My stomach isn't happy and I'm afraid the prevacid is messing me up yet without it I suffer from acid reflex badly and begin wheezing. I am looking for a new doctor to help me... in the mean time I hope others may be able to shed some light for me.. :(

Hi Aly10,
Welcome to Healing Well!  I can definitely identify with the problems you're having.  I have allergies and asthma, and over the years my reflux got worse and started causing my lungs to deteriorate and my asthma get much worse.  It's late, and I have to get up in the morning, so I'll try to keep this short.
First, if I were you I'd go back on the Prevacid 2X a day as your doctor recommended.  When you have reactive lungs, it's important to protect them.  It would be good if you could be seen by a good asthma specialist.  I would expect he/she to be very well-versed in how reflux can create havoc with the lungs.
Refluxing into your lungs is nothing to ignore, as if the reflux is bad enough it can cause damage.  You need to get the reflux into control.  Are you sleeping on a flat bed?  If so, I highly recommend putting bed risers and/or blocks under the legs at the head of the bed to elevate it about 8 inches.  That way gravity will help keep the acid in your stomach at night and protect your lungs.
My PCP (and my asthma doc concurred) had me on Protonix 40mg (similar to Prevacid) twice a day as well as 300mg Ranitidine (Zantac) at bedtime.  I can't emphasize enough the importance of getting that reflux under control so your lungs can heal and you can improve.
As far as the Zyrtec goes...if you're having allergic reactions when you're not on it, by all means, take it!
Glad you've joined the forum.  Hang in there!
Take care,
