Welcome to Healing Well! I can definitely identify with the problems you're having. I have allergies and asthma, and over the years my reflux got worse and started causing my lungs to deteriorate and my asthma get much worse. It's late, and I have to get up in the morning, so I'll try to keep this short.
First, if I were you I'd go back on the Prevacid 2X a day as your doctor recommended. When you have reactive lungs, it's important to protect them. It would be good if you could be seen by a good asthma specialist. I would expect he/she to be very well-versed in how reflux can create havoc with the lungs.
Refluxing into your lungs is nothing to ignore, as if the reflux is bad enough it can cause damage. You need to get the reflux into control. Are you sleeping on a flat bed? If so, I highly recommend putting bed risers and/or blocks under the legs at the head of the bed to elevate it about 8 inches. That way gravity will help keep the acid in your stomach at night and protect your lungs.
My PCP (and my asthma doc concurred) had me on Protonix 40mg (similar to Prevacid) twice a day as well as 300mg Ranitidine (Zantac) at bedtime. I can't emphasize enough the importance of getting that reflux under control so your lungs can heal and you can improve.
As far as the Zyrtec goes...if you're having allergic reactions when you're not on it, by all means, take it!
Glad you've joined the forum. Hang in there!
