Hi everyone,

I recently shared my experiences with a chronic (almost 11 months) sore throat here: www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=45&p=1&m=2811704#m2811966

As I described there, I was initially treated (while being overseas) for LPR. However, here in the US, reflux has been "ruled out" after several tests. The Cleveland Clinic doctors' best guess is that it is a nerves issue. So here's some questions for ya:

1. Is this called laryngeal sensory neuropathy?

2. They put me on neurontin/gabapentin with a low dosage at first and eventually moving to 400 mg a day. (I currently take 200 mg a day.) They also gave me lidocaine "for pain." Has anyone had success with these?

If LPR AND LSN are ruled out, then I really have no idea what I'll do.

Any help would be really, really appreciated.

PS These folks had situations where LPR was misdiagnosed and they were successfully treated for nerves issues.

If it is nerve pain, I had good results for a while with gabapentin. I eventually had to switch to Lyrica and now am taking Effexor. This is for rib nerve pain though.

Take care,
Bill

Thanks opnwhl4. Honestly, I'm not really sure what "nerve pain" is. I think the doctors and I are trying this as Plan B after reflux was ruled out.

My nerve pain can be anything from an ache, stabbing, to sharp shooting pains. Nerve pain can do weird things. I'll admit you are the first person I have heard of with this diagnosis.

Take care,
Bill

Thanks. I'm not sure if I would categorize my irritation as aching or a sharp shooting pain, just sore and irritated and it hurts to talk. I think my doctors might be guessing at this point.

With that being said, these two have similar stories:

My ENT at Ohio State University says he has plenty of patients that hes treating for irritable larynx syndrome with nuerontin. I am probably next on the list to try it. I hope it works.

Hey lostsub and all the others on this thread! How are all of you doing? Nine months ago I began this unwanted journey and I am curious how those who started ahead of me are doing. Any good news to report?
