I have a 1cm hiatus hernia, moderate Gerd/Lpr, and want to have a baby again ( I have one now, I developed Gerd/Lpr after my first pregnancy.)

I don't know what I should do to have a safe second pregnancy. I am thinking of three ways:

1, Taking medicines during pregnancy. The risks include the enlargement of my current hiatus hernia, which may make linx impossible for me, discomforts and harms on my baby.

2, Do linx and hiatus hernia repair first, then go to get pregnant. I don't know whether pregnancy will make the hiatus hernia recur or not. Or any other bad effects, there is no information on this. How soon can I get pregnant after having linx?

2, Do nissen and hernia repair first, then have baby. I may need a redo after pregnancy, and I also have to wait 1 or 2 years before pregnancy. I am not young now. I don't want to wait that long. Also the hernia may come back.

I just don't know what to do and feel upset sometime. I really need some help and suggestion. Thanks.

Hello Hopegood. I'm in the same situation as you, have a small hiatal hernia and moderate Gerd. My hernia was most probably caused by stress and lifestyle factors i guess. I don't have a baby but wish to have one, but I'm very scared with the Gerd situation. I think nobody understands at this point! Ok as far as I've heard, if you have surgery before pregnancy it will probably come undone. I would probably choose to have the surgery after having a baby. And I have a question: Why would the hernia become bigger with the use of medicine during pregnancy? And your 1cm hernia is considered to be small or medium size? Thanks..and let's try to be hopeful!

Hi SaggitariusGirl,

1cm hernia is considered to be a small one, according to my GI. What is the size of your hernia?

My GI doctor told me that hernia may stay the same size and it also may grow larger during pregnancy.

I don't know whether linx can do a better job than nissen. At least I think there is no undone for linx. I just worried whether hernia will come back.

Best

There really shouldn't be any reason for a pregnancy to damage a nissen. I have been through some horrendous dry heave spells and that didn't hurt anything. Now, having something large shoved down your esophagus will damage it. That's why I had a 2nd redo.

also, remember basically everyone has a HH, but some people never have GERD and don't have a doctor tell them they do. It's a natural hole into the chest cavity.

Take care,
Bill

I don't know the size of it, but they've told me its small. What's the difference between a Linx and a Nissen surgery? Are they both done laparoscopically? My doc said that since the hernia it's small you don't have to do sth about it now
