Hello all,
I am having the manomotry test done on Monday and the Lap Nissen done on Wednesday. I had a partial manomotry test done a few weeks ago and I had trouble not swallowing when I wasn't supposed to. Any ideas on how to keep myself from automatically swallowing? The test before was horribly uncomfortable and wanted to know if anyone had any ideas on how to make it more tolerable? I know it's not a super long test, was told about an hour, so I'm sure I'll get through it, but not looking forward to it at all.

Also I'm nervous about the surgery. I talked briefly with the surgeon but he didn't give me a lot of information, I think because he figured I knew most of it already since I told him I looked it up. Would have felt better had he told me more of what to expect pre and post op. I am looking forward to feeling better and know that it is a long road to recovery but at least I'll be on the right road for the first time in many yrs. I've been reading other's post and will read more later, but wondered what, if any thing, to expect pre-op? I see the pre-op doc on Monday after the manomotry test, but wondered if anyone could give me any information before then?

cmiller - When you get the urge place your tongue at the roof of your mouth.  Sounds strange but, it works.  In actuality I left my tongue on the roof of my mouth unless I had to do a swallow.  Good Luck.

My pre-op assessment basically consisted of some nurse asking me all sorts of questions regarding my health and meds I take and also she did a swab to test for mrsa. She didn't talk about the operation itself or the aftercare. After I had the op they sent a dietician round to the ward I was on to discuss about the diet I should be eating.

OHSOBAD was on the money about toungue on the roof of your mouth to prevent swallowing during the manometry.

The surgery is not that bad. I was surprised at how easy it was compared to the level of anxiety I had before surgery. I personally did not have anything to do preop. I had bloodwork done in the hospital and a urine test when they were putting in my IVs right before surgery, but nothing else had to be done for me.

Thank you all for the advice, I'll try the tongue thing. Still very nervous about the menomotry and the surgery but this forum is nice because it lets me know I'm not alone. Thanks again.

I also struggled with the test. There was no way I wanted to repeat it, so I put myself on a beautiful beach in the Caribbean, and took in relaxing breaths as I enjoyed the sea breeze and warmth of the sun. It helped. The tech said whatever you are doing, keep it up.

I wish I had known about the tongue on roof of mouth trick. I'm surprised my tech didn't suggest it.

Good luck!
