I am just posting an update on my weening off of PPI process that has been going on for a few months now. I am now down to a half of an OTC Omeprazole pill and Gaviscon at night. I went from 40mg prescription Nexium to an OTC Zegrid to a half of Omeprazole OTC. At one point a few years ago I was on 40 mg prescription protonix twice a day. I am doing ok, I have some gas pains and I had to stop chewing gum as the sorbitol appears to me upsetting my stomach, so I occasionally have a tight throat feeling but that could also be stress related.
My goal is Pepcid Complete. That is taken once a day and is an OTC H2 Blocker. I will stay on the half of OTC Omeprazole for probably 2 weeks and then I will take the plunge! I do not think it is necessary to take half of a half of the OTC Omeprazole I think I can make the leap to the H2 Blocker. My doctor thought I could just switch from the PPI to the H2 Blocker but I know better.
