Hi,  My name is Nancy, husband Bob and our 40 year old son is Robert. Robert just turned 40 in August and he just happens to have been born wih Down Syndrome.  We live in Atlanta and none of our surgeons do the Linx procedure here yet, so that is why we were interested in going to Mayo in Jacksonville where the procedure has been approved and is being down.  But we also heard good things about a Dr. Jeffery Mandel in Savannah, Ga and this is closer for us, so we are going down around the first of November for a consultation.  Does anyone have in information on Dr. Mandel success with the Linx procedure?  Or just any information of Dr. Mandel himself.
Robert has a completely open lower eso. spinter that enables food, ect to aspirate back into his lungs and thishas  happened in  2011, 2012 and this past july.  Each time he get pneumonia and winds up in intersive care.
He is a very smart young man, and he  works each week at a company near our home that makes Candles for school sales and Robert is a valualbe part of the team there.  But starting in 2011 when he goes to camps in the North Georgia mountains for one week, he would have too good of a time and the conselours didn't watch that he did not eat too much like boys will be boys when they are away from home.
So when Robert lays down at night, he regurgitates and fluid and such goes into this lungs and he gets sick.  we changed gastro doctors who said that because Robert was Down that there was not much to be done, just increase his PPI meds.  His mother, me, is a retired RN and I didn't listed to that Dr., just found a wonderful gastroenteroligist name Randy Yanda in Atlanta, who did a Upper Gi, and a gatric emptying study and told me about the drs. down in mayo doing the Linx.  So I would appreciate any feedback from those who have had Linx, praises, regrets?  Thanks  Nancy Leathers

Hi Nancy,
Welcome to Healing Well!  I'm sorry to hear your son is having problems with his reflux.  I can certainly identify with the effects of reflux on the lungs, as that is the reason I had a Nissen fundoplication surgery in 2009.
There have been several members here who've had the LINX surgery.  Here's a link to one person's recovery journal.  It will give you an idea about what one person's experience was:
I expect someone will be by soon to provide additional support and information.
Glad you've joined the forum!
Best wishes,
