I need input! I'm a 31 year old female...about 2 months ago I developed frequent belching and I have no idea why. I felt nauseas one day which is when the belching started. The nausea went away but the burping hasn't. It's on and off throughout the day....everyday. It happens even when I'm not eating or drinking, but increases when I eat or drink. I have NO acid reflux, no heartburn, no GERD...no other symptoms. Just this excessive belching. It happens the minute I get out of bed in the morning, and often times when I go from a laying down/sitting position to standing. I was pretty worried so my GI dr. did an endoscopy which came back perfectly normal. All the biopsies (for H. Pylori & Celiacs) came back negative. Bloodwork was normal. Has anyone experienced anything like this and found out what the cause was? Not only is it annoying but it's really scaring me that it could be something serious. However, my GI doctor says he thinks it's stress/anxiety/air swallowing. I don't buy that...I've never had this happen before and how would this just "appear" one day. I'm having an ultrasound this week because I asked my dr. for it to make sure nothing weird shows up.

PLEASE...I'd appreciate any input at all...this is driving me crazy!

I'd like to second a need for some advice; very similar happens to me, regardless of what I eat, drink or do. It can happen from the moment I wake up. I notice if I... fart more and swallow less often, I belch less. Also, I tend to swallow belches back down, because I'm scared they're doing damage; am I simply belching up and swallowing down the same gas all the time?

I started to get these problems after going off my PPI's 7 weeks ago but since I have stopped eating all processed foods, grain based foods, and dairy products it has gone away. That was about a week and a half ago and starting a few days ago I hardly have any gas at all. All I drink is water and all I eat are fresh vegetables, fruits and meats. Nothing that is canned or has been frozen. I would have a lot of gas in the morning, throughout the day, and even throughout the night. It was worse after I ate but still a problem when my stomach was empty. If you haven't done so, try cutting out grain based foods, processed foods, and dairy products. I wouldn't think it would take more than 2-3 weeks to notice any results if it is really bad. If you have tried this then I'm not sure what to tell you.

My belching issue has nothing to do with acid, heartburn, etc. Wondering if anyone has this issue completely unrelated to acid, PPIs, etc...it's simply burping air with no other issues...

From my experience I'm wondering if your problem may be due to certain foods, types of foods, or certain ingredients within the foods that are causing your problems. For me, even after I stopped eating certain foods I still had the problems but they went away eventually. I was still belching on an empty stomach but not as much as I was after I ate. The different types of foods didn't affect my acid reflux as much as it affected the amount of gas I had. I guess heavy carb items tend to make your body produce more gas than other items but the amount of gas that is produced from each food item is different from person to person. It looks like you were tested for the main strains of bad bacteria but there are many different types and strains that can be in your digestive system causing you to have excesive gas. Even if the gas is only traveling up doesn't mean that you don't have this problem. Are you currently taking any probiotics? If not, then this could help if you do have exesive bad bacteria in your digestive track. I'm just thinking of things that you can do to try and narrow in what is causing this. Have you also tried taking anything like Gas-X to lessen the symptoms at all?

Frequent belching can be one symptom of a hiatus hernia. When my hernia was large I was burping all the time. Be thankful you dont have heartburn to deal with too!

There are some self correction techniques for hiatus hernias on the web, try some and see if things improve.

But it could also be a dietary thing. Dairy is notorious for being gassy, try going dairy free for a while.

Try going wheat/gluten-free for a couple weeks. Many people have a gluten sensitivity, even without full-blown Celiac disease. Undigested wheat sitting in the stomach releases gas and can cause bloating and (presumably) burping. I had a horrible cough and was burping all the time, too, and going gluten-free has decreased my cough and burping significantly.

Thanks for your replies. I know I don't have a hiatal hernia (had endoscopy last month and I don't have one). I could try the wheat/gluten free but it still doesn't make sense I would wake up one day out of nowhere burping with a brand new sensitivity to gluten? Plus I don't have bloating or other symptoms. It's really confusing. I have to be honest...my mind always wanders to the worst. I feared stomach cancer (because I saw something listing frequent belching as a sign on google)...which is why I had the endoscopy to rule that out. Stomach and esophagus were totally normal. Now I'm worrying myself about other cancers. Is this ridiculous? Could other organs/cancers cause burping? I know gallbladder issues can cause it but again I have no other symptoms of that. If anyone wants to talk some sense into me I'd really appreciate it :)

Hi

You could have a hernia they are not always seen on an endoscopy. You could try having a barium swallow to see if it shows up on that but even then it may not. My surgeon said that sometimes they can be difficult to spot.
