Last week, I was at a restaurant, sitting next to a huge stack of plates and the waiter knocks over the entire pile and the crashing scared me half to death, it literally felt like my heart was jumping out of my chest. For the past week, I've been experiencing soreness and slight pain on the left side of my upper body right where my heart is. It's almost what I imagine heartburn to feel like - so I was wondering if trauma can cause heartburn? How should I handle this? Thanks for your advice!

Hi pwagner,
As far as I know, the only kind of trauma that can cause an upper GI problem like reflux, would be one that was severe enough to damage your LES--a car accident, etc.  It sounds as if you might have pulled a muscle in your effort to protect yourself from the falling dishes.
Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you for your response! I went to have it checked and shockingly I have "right heart strain," which was likely a per-existing condition and just brought to the surface by this trauma.
