Hi everyone, looking for some advise.
I’m a 31 year old male and for the last couple of months have been suffering from real bad stomach pains, bloating feeling and getting generally depressed about it all. I’ve been to the doctors where they just gave me some peppermint oil – didn’t have any effect. I ended up going A&E one night as I was getting so fed up wih it. Here they predicted I had Gastritis and found trace of blood in my urine. I was given 5 days of antibiotics and Lansaprozole. This was a couple of weeks ago now and still I am suffering. Doctor has since changed peppermint oil for colofac but again still no change. Some days are better than others and I can't pin it down to certain foods/drinks. I have cut down on alcohol almost completely but again this has not made much difference. I have another doctors appointment in the new year if no better where we will talk about endoscope test to check what’s going on inside. Just wish I knew what it was causing it and how to fix this. Any ideas of how long this will last if it is Gastritis? I have had blood tests and stool samples tested and all results came back ok which can be both good news and bad news as I'm none the wiser as what's really wrong. Please help if you can.

An endoscopy will confirm the problem. In the mean time, have you tried any other medications? If things like Tums, Pepcid, or Prilosec help the pain, it is probably gastritis. I would move forward with the endoscopy in your case, to confirm the problem. Good luck!

Gas x or beano
I have also found good results with taking a calcium supplement. The kind for acid stomach.....forgot the name.
Also, watch what you eat. I couldn't figure out what was making my stomach so bloated but then realized it was the almonds I was eating everyday. Veggies can do it too.

Also, take Gaviscon chewables before bed or after your meals

Thanks for the advise. I also try to eat quite healthy but this bloating feeling is horrible. Don't think the pills the doctor has given me is doing anything. So will try some of your ideas.

Foods that are easier to digest may make you more comfortable. Try eating more protein, less fat and carbs. It is not necessarily specific foods, but perhaps groups of foods that bother you.

I have also been diagnosed with gastritis numerous times and one thing i do know is that peppermint made me worse!! Take it from someone who use to love peppermint patties! Between the chocolate and the peppermint i would be in pain for days. Be careful with chocolate, greasy foods, mayonnaise, chicken skin, gravies. Just tweak your diet a bit and see what happens.

I have stopped peppermint as was not helping at all but have not tried stopping chocolate but will cut this out as I eat chocolate nearly every night and do wake up feeling bloated and in pain. Thanks for advise, will see how it goes.

After another visit to the doctors, I am now awaiting an appointment from the Hospital for a camera down the throat. I have also been put on another load of pills this time Domperidone - which sounds like expensive champaign to me haha but will see how it goes. Bit worried as I'm still losing weight down to 61Kg when weighed at the doctors yesterday. Considering I weighed 11 stone just over 6 months ago this is quite a big drop especially when I feel like I'm eating the same. Let's hope for some good news. cry

Hi, Ive been through exactly the same as you, so i feel for you, i know how depressing it is.

Sounds like gastritis, like I had. You should really be put onto PPIs, for longer than 5 days! Standard course here is 3 months. domperidone can help nausea but it also speeds up how fast the stomach empties, and an empty stomach isnt good for gastritis.

My advice is eat frequentl, never have an empty stomach, dont eat fatty foods, dont eat acidic or spicy foods, and take some ant acids just after each meal.

it can take quite a while for things to get better, and dont start back on fatty foods once youre feeling better as youll end up back to square one, take it easy.

Thanks for advise. I was on lansaprozole for 28 days it was just the antibiotics I was on for 5 days and think the reason for having them is because of the race of blood in my urine, which cleared up. How are you feeling now Andy? Did you have the camera down the throat? Did you find it was worse in the mornings? Could be down to having empty stomach like you said.

Cheers buddy

Well im actually feeling bad atm, but it comes and goes every couple of months, i still havent figured out exactly my triggers. I seem to have a very weak stomach so its something that I always seem to get from one thing or another. Most people will feel better after only week or two though once they are doing the right things. Depends if you have an ulcer though, or baterial infection, they take longer to clear up.

Ive had two cameras down the throat, not pleasent at all but at least it gave me a diagnosis, doesnt really help much in terms of treatment though as they usually start you on that right away.

Definitely worse in the morning, then gradually gets better throughout the day as I get more food in my stomach. I found carafate in the middle of the night helped too if your dr will prescribe you it.

Sorry to hear your still not feeling better. I work shift work which probably don't help with meal patterns but at least on nights I can make sure my stomach doesn't get too empty, thanks. Yeah not looking forward to the camera down the throat but if it helps find out the problem then it's got to be done. Keep me updated with your progress. Hope it improves for you soon.
