I'm a Crohn's patient and a GERD sufferer for 15 years. I've always suffered from the normal symptoms of GERD: reflux, heartburn, vomiting, nausea and excessive saliva. I had h.pylori two times throughout the 15 years. Seven years ago I was diagnosed w Crohn's which added to me gastritis, duodenitis and lately gastroduodenitis. I think these were caused mainly by steroids. However, lately, exactly 2 months ago, I started to have episodes of throat soreness which I thought mistakenly to be colds. These include nasal drip, sore throat, asthma like symptoms and hoarse voice. It's ongoing. I also had two episodes of chocking; as if somebody is strangling me and these are cleared by throwing up. Two days ago, I had severe sore throat, greenish nasal discharge and developed fever (38.3 C). I keep clearing my throat and feel I'm chocking.
My Crohn's is already giving me hard times and I'm in the middle of a flare up. I kept reading for diseases matching my symptoms and found that LPR is the most appropriate one as I need to try to try things first before I rush to my GI (I have been either calling or rushing to see my GI every week in the last 3 weeks). I took Gaviscon and it calmed down a bit the feeling of chocking.
So far, I have had 5 upper endoscopies and two barium X-rays and all showed reflux. However, my LES is normal. My GI told me that this is called NERD and requires I take Nexium 40 mg double dose and still my symptoms are not controlled. Every now and then I take Zantac 300 mg twice/day, Gaviscon 4 times, caralfate and Zofran im injections are a necessity for me.
I don't think I'm eligible for fundoplication as the sphincter is normal. What other treatments are out there?
Any replies are highly appreciated.
