I'm going to need a manometry. Does the insertion feel similar to a laryngoscopy? Is it a similar thickness?

Some what similar, but much longer and a little thicker. The trick to getting it down is to tuck your chin to your chest and swallow a lot.

Take care,

It is quite a bit bigger, but I have a deviated septum and I manage fine. Do as Bill says tuck your chin down and keep swallowing the water when they feed it down, I actually don,t mind it that much at all.

Hi Pink,
It's one of those necessary evils. It provides information that no other test provides, and is essential in finding out how your swallowing reflex works. I've had it twice, and while was glad when it was over, it's not all that bad. There will be a nurse/technician/coach who will talk you through.

Bill swears by keeping your mouth open to help with the "not taking a swallow in between" part. I'm sure he's had plenty, so he's a good one to listen to. Don't waste any time worrying about it.

Here's a video showing a patient having a manometry, followed by the placement of the 24 hr PH probe. Depending on your personality, seeing it might be helpful. If you think it would make you more anxious, by all means, ignore the link.

I found that pinning your tongue to the roof of your mouth or holding the tip of it after you do the swallow helps to keep from doing a double swallow. Any double swallows have to be redone as they need 1 clean swallow to get a good reading.

Take care,
Bill
