I'm new here and know that everyone experiences this awful journey of GERD and Esophagitis differently and at different levels. If anyone has experienced what I have I would like to know as I've never felt so alone in this. I went to the doctor last month and told her of the following symptoms...Heartburn, whole chest burning, feeling as something in throat when I swallow, soreness in gullet when I eat and breastbone pain and top of sternum pain. She said it sounded like GERD and Esophagitis. I was prescribed Nexium 40mg in AM & Rantidine 300 mg to be taken in PM. I've been on them for about 3 weeks and was seeing a noticeable improvement to the above symptoms. Some symptoms totally gone. I have been getting a dry mouth and throat and wondered if that was a side effect of the medicine? Anyway, I am to go back to her next week for a follow up and she will be scheduling me an appt. for a scope too.(not sure of details). I've been mainly eating oatmeal, bananas, black beans, steamed vegetables, salads, cheese, crackers and water. No coffee or spicy foods. However, today I had the worst chest burning I've experienced after eating licorice candy...made with real licorice not anise. (Not to be confused with the DGL chewable licorice). Anyway, it burnt terribly as I was swallowing it!!!!I still have a slight burning sensation in the upper chest and that's been a few hours ago. I was just beginning to think that I was healing since so many of my symptoms dissipated, but after eating the licorice its told me otherwise??? I'm really feeling defeated. I would like to hear if anyone has experienced... whole chest burning, feeling as something in throat when you swallow, soreness in gullet and breastbone pain. Also, if you had it how long it took before you healed totally. I'm wondering if I have ulcers in the esophagus or erosive esophagitis. I've scared myself by reading too much on the net. :(
Thank you for replying...

I would have the endoscopy before worrying too much about symptoms first. Continue eating blandly, chicken fish, rice can be added to your diet if you aren't a vegetarian, easy to digest things. Eat smaller meals but more often. Continue taking your tablets. Ulcers can take up to a few months to heal .the endoscopy is the most accurate test internally as they can see what is exactly going on inside ..

Hi Jamosca,

Thank you for posting about the bland foods. Also, the additional info about ulcers is a help to ease the mind and agree about the endoscopy. I would like to know if others can equate with the symptoms I've experienced. I've read through some of the posts and they differ somewhat of course. Just feeling kind of alone in this journey and I hope to get lots of feedback here. Bye the way...rice is sounding good
tonight. :)
