This is a two part question. I have researched all kinds of diets; histamine intolerance, GERD, alkaline, etc. and they all conflict. What diet do you use with severe GERD? (still having symptoms while on Nexium 2x a day). I read that the LES muscle is tightened by eating plant proteins like beans and deep breathing. Unfortunately, I have to avoid any food that causes gas including broccoli, beans, onions and green peppers. What else tightens the LES?

Good morning musicchick.

I don't bother with those one-fits-all diets. I found my own food triggers by consulting my allergist. She had me keep a "food journal" (see the search box at the top of the page).

After finding a meal that triggered my reflux, I had to break down the meal into its ingredients. Then I did "challenge testing" by eating only a bit of ingredient, doubling the portion, waiting .... (again see the search box). For me it wasn't the meat in the hamburger, it was the condiments (and broccoli and onions). When I had a short list of my triggers I googled them along with "food allergies" and found the common thread that linked them.

This won't work for everyone, but it stopped my stomach from refluxing and squeezing. My LES valve was still bad, but I didn't have the pain anymore.

But what about when you have it all the time, whether you are eating or not? I can't tell what triggers it because I always have it and the choking/spasms in my throat too. I'm looking for food that can reduce my congestion and help heal the LES. I also want to stop taking the Nexium 2x a day.

I've found that i have absolutely no consistent triggers, except potentially for alchohol. A lot of work has been done on these and science doesn't really back up the general dietary recommendations. As I understand it the two exceptions are caffeine (coffee and chocolate) and alchohol. The others (citrus, peppermint, etc. ad infinitum) haven't yet been backed via studies.

Try going to pubmed.com and search for something like "dietary gerd".

Ok, thanks. I'm on a very simple diet right now. We took the alkaline food list and the histamine intolerance food list and I'm eating the foods that are on both lists for two weeks. Day two and I'm already having trouble because there isn't much on it but at the same time, I feel lighter. No grains, dairy, soy, processed foods, boxed foods, or anything really. The list is like asparagus, kale, watermelon (not in season now), egg occasionally, fresh chicken occasionally, freshwater wild fish but only if frozen and fresh, lettuce, carrots, a few other veggies, almonds, almond butter, apples in moderation, canteloupe (which I hate), cucumber, coconut, and sunflower seeds are mostly what is on it. I miss rice but not the heavy feeling in my stomach. I also have to cook all veggies and even some fruit because otherwise my stomach hurts. I'm still doing nexium 2x/day. I have all the symptoms of GERD and LPR. Hmph. I hope this ends soon. I'd like to keep some rice in my diet, but reduce it significantly from what it was. I miss my dairy free/gluten free mac and cheese but it has rice and yeast. Two of my no no's this week.
