When I say acid supplements I am talking about
any sort of supplement you can take to be in place of acid. HCI tablets and ACV would both fall in this category. As far as probiotics, acidophilus is a main one. I was taking this probiotic
and it seemed to help a bit. Enzymes should help as well. I was taking them at first. You need to be careful with those though as there are different types of enzymes that help break down different types of food. Through research I have found that some GERD problems can come from your body not producing the right enzymes which can be fixed through a proper diet. If you think about
it, the body needs to produce all of these things in order to function correctly and if we don't provide it with all of these things, it will stop functioning correctly over time. This is why I highly recommend a strict diet with the proper nutrients in order to give the body what it needs.
When I cut off PPI's cold turkey, I went as long as I could handle it before going back on something. I lasted about
3 months with many more bad days than good days and just tums. I was going through about
5-10 tums a day on a good day. I believe I was having such a hard time because I was waiting for my gastrin levels to drop. I gave in but didn't want to go back to PPI's so I started taking H2-blockers instead as they don't block as much acid. I started off with 3-4 tablets a day, went down to 3, then to 2, and now I am at 1. This process took about
4 months. I had a few bad days when dropping down but when I was on 2, I went to 1, had a week of heartburn then went back to 2. Tried again after a couple of weeks with the same results. I then started to have stomach cramps like I was malnourished. I then dropped down to 1 and had no rebound and the stomach cramps went away the next day. That was about
a week and a half ago. So now I'm going to keep with 1 until it feels like I don't need it anymore. I think a few months.
I did feel some nausea at the beginning but I think it was partly due to my body detoxing as I had immediately switched to the Paleo diet when coming off the PPI's.
To give an idea of how much pain I was in when I first came off, I couldn't sleep very well, if at all, the first few nights, even sitting up, due to how much acid there was. I had constant heartburn the first couple months. Nothing helped but I didn't want to go back to PPI's, I wanted to ride it out. I will never forget that first night I went without the PPI. I woke up with so much pain I ended up eating some bread in hopes it would soak up the acid. I never felt that much burning before in my life. I took 4 tums that night as well and it didn't even phase it. Right now, if I get any heartburn, 1 tums makes it go away.
