I went to an ent doctor because I had a huge feeling of a lump in my throat. My lump gets worse when I try to go places like school, hang out with friends, hang out with a girl I like, and work. then I feel the need to dry heave which I sometimes do but nothing comes out. I drink every weekend because I am in college and the lump feels a lot bigger the day after I drink. My doctor said I have gerd. So he gave me 20 mg of omeprazole for twice a day. I was also put on clonzapam and Zoloft for anxiety but my dad doesn't want me to take those because he doesn't want me to become addicted

I have been on the omep since Monday and Im not going on my spring break trip anymore because of this. So this next week Im just gonna sit in bed and relax and see if this takes the feeling away. I have never had heartburn so I don't actually know if it is gerd. This is really affecting my school and my life and also my social life.

What should I do?

How long will it take the omeprazole to work?

Does this sound like gerd?

Please help!

You should follow your doctor not your dad-you shoud know he is not a medical expert like your doctor. Wait for the medicines to work. All medicines have side effects find out what they are as a matter of urgency. Look it up on the Web.
You should definitely stop drinking whilst on meds if the meds info says you should. Remember two standard drinks is all you should ever have a day. That is the accepted evidence.

Get a second opinion on your condition from an expert-get a referral from your doctor.

I hope you get better soon.

trfish,

It sounds like your doctor is trying to eliminate two possible causes of the lump. Omep reduces stomach acid to about 10% or less of what it is normally. The theory being that acid got into your throat and caused some scaring that feels like the lump. Anxiety can also cause a lump, thus the other meds.

Neither treatment will "heal" the lump. If it was from stomach acid, the omep should prevent further damage and allow it to heal naturally. If it's from anxiety, those meds should get that under control and make the lump go away naturally. But you'll still need to find a non drug treatment for the anxiety for the long term.

If you are having other heartburn/GERD symptoms (gas, bloating, occasional dispersed pain or burning feeling in the upper chest, foul taste in your mouth, then that may be the cause. If the anxiety meds make the lump disappear, then you know that's probably the issue. Anxiety can also cause digestive upset which may result in heartburn or reflex, and result in acid damaging your throat. In other words, anxiety could be the whole cause here.

There are other possible causes, and if the result of these two treatments doesn't bring some conclusions after a few weeks, then your Doc should explore other areas. If he doesn't, then I would follow ablatee's advise ask for referral to a GI doctor first.

All of the meds you are taking have side effects and consequences you should be aware of with long term use, especially the omep. Spend some time with Google and learn the things the docs may not tell you.. Good luck.

My dad is a medical professor at des moines university. One of the best medical colleges in the country, so he knows what he is talking about.
