First off all, thanks to everyone on this forum. In the first weeks after my nissen surgery, you guys kept me sane by sharing your experiences it made me feel like I wasn't alone in this and that what I was experiencing was normal. Thank you so much for being here. It made a huge difference for me.

Now, I'm currently in my ninth week post nissen and since this weekend I have gotten a very bad cold. My wife and son had it first and I probably got it from them. At first I mostly got painful sinuses, but after two days I got a very sore and raw throat, the typical symptoms of a cold. Also, I've been pretty exhausted since my wife and son got the cold as their coughing kept me up at night. Not that I mind very much, but it's made me very tired due to lack of sleep.

Since the beginning of the cold I've been a feeling mild acid burning and last night I got a very bad attack that of heartburn. It was one of the worst attacks I had every had.

Is it at all possible that the combination of a cold and sleep deprivation can bring back the GERD symptoms? In the past, before my nissen surgery, I had also noticed a correlation between getting a cold and gerd symptoms. I know that GERD can make a cold much worse, but can a cold bring on GERD symptoms?

Hello,

I'm also 9 weeks post-op and am experiencing something very similar. It all started with a cold about 3 weeks ago. I've had and still have a decent amount of post-nasal drip and am having what feels like reflux. Still trying to figure out if it's actually reflux or if it just feels like it. Maybe it's a combination of mucus and food particles getting stuck in the wrap? I have been told that getting things stuck can feel like reflux. At this point, I really really hope that is all I'm feeling but of course I'm worried. I even scheduled an appt with my surgeon next week to discuss and see what he thinks.

Hope others reply to this thread to offer experiences and advice.

Hi Carria5,

When things get stuck it does feel like reflux: I've had foods get stuck a couple of times, but I was able to get them loose with water.

Anyway, please let us know what your surgeon said. I haven't made another appointment with mind yet: I'm going to wait and see how this cold goes and if the symptoms reappear.
