So glad I found this board, seems most of you are filled with helpful information. Let's see, where to start...about ten days ago I noticed a burning pain in my stomach, upper left would come and go.

I recognized it from the last time I had been taken NSAIDS too frequently so instead of going to the doctor I stopped taking the Naproxen and bought OTC Prevacid...the first five days I had no problem, the stomach pain had decreased.

But on day six I started experiencing full blown reflux/GERD issues...burning in chest all the way to my chin...burning which wraps all the way around to my back..burning in shoulder blades which comes and goes..MUCH worse we I lay in bed...and now I have a lump like feeling in the back ofmy throat..I have regurgitated stomach acid once also ( which seems to have brought on the feeling in my throat) .. my throat also burns and is worse some times when I eat but not always.

NONE of this makes sense to me..WHy would the insane relux manifest itself once I started taking the Prevacid..because prior to taking it I rarely had relux...ugghhhh..I tried NOT taking the Prevacid and the relux was 10 times worse..?

Any suggestions....this is causing me a great deal of stress and anxiety..topped with a stressful as heck job and I am about to lose it...being tge research junkie I am, I have my self convinvced I have some cancer in my esophagus.

I do have a DR appointment on Monday, but looking for some advice..I have found that many times folks on boards like this are as well as or better informed then most Internists.....Much Thanks to you all, Mary Lee

Hi Mary Lee,

Sorry to hear you're struggling with reflux. You're definitely in the right place!

Here is a link to some lifestyle changes that can help your symptoms:
One tip that it mentions is elevating the head of your bed, which I think would be extremely helpful to you, since you're getting symptoms upon lying down. Also, don't eat anything for 3-4 hours before lying down.

Here is a link to some helpful food choice information:
While trigger foods vary from person to person, these food choices may help you.

I experienced something similar to you...after taking NSAIDS my GERD got much worse and become evident, even though I wasn't aware I had a problem.

Your LES (the valve that holds the acid in your stomach)can become less effective over time, thus allowing reflux to migrate into your esophagus, where it is painful.

You've definitely come to the right place. I'm sure others will be by soon to provide support and information. Good luck with your doctor appointment! Let us know how it goes!

Best wishes,
