Hi, all. I had stomach pains a couple of years ago, took Nexium for a couple of months, and they subsided. I went off the Nexium without a problem. Then this past fall I developed a chronic cough for several months which turned into a sore throat and acid-taste after eating. Upper GI/Barium swallow xrays revealed significant reflux. I was also diagnosed with a chronic sinus infection. I am now on Prilosec 40 mg and antibiotics for the sinus infection.
I've been on the prescription Prilosec for about 10 days now, but I am still having an acidy feeling in my throat when I swallow. The past couple of nights I have even had an acid taste in my mouth. I have already cut all of the usual suspects (coffee, alcohol, chocolate, etc.) I haven't been eating three hours before bed and I'm on a wedge pillow. Is it normal that I would still be experiencing this acid symptom, even on the medicine? Does it just take longer to work?
I'm aware of the controversy surrounding ppis, and I really don't want to be on it to begin with, but I am scared that if I don't heal I am going to make matters worse. By the time I saw my doc two weeks ago my throat was so sore and burny and I was losing my voice. I just don't get why I am not experiencing relief on the med (especially since I've made lots of other changes as well). Do I need to switch my ppi? Double my dose? All of the information is overwhelming and I am just learning about alternatives from you all. My doctor's attitude is pretty much "this is not curable and you will need the medicine indefinitely." I am 37 years old, don't need to lose weight, and otherwise healthy (albeit frequently stressed out, which this diagnosis is not helping).
I'd appreciate any help or direction you could offer.
