Hi, all. I had stomach pains a couple of years ago, took Nexium for a couple of months, and they subsided. I went off the Nexium without a problem. Then this past fall I developed a chronic cough for several months which turned into a sore throat and acid-taste after eating. Upper GI/Barium swallow xrays revealed significant reflux. I was also diagnosed with a chronic sinus infection. I am now on Prilosec 40 mg and antibiotics for the sinus infection.

I've been on the prescription Prilosec for about 10 days now, but I am still having an acidy feeling in my throat when I swallow. The past couple of nights I have even had an acid taste in my mouth. I have already cut all of the usual suspects (coffee, alcohol, chocolate, etc.) I haven't been eating three hours before bed and I'm on a wedge pillow. Is it normal that I would still be experiencing this acid symptom, even on the medicine? Does it just take longer to work?

I'm aware of the controversy surrounding ppis, and I really don't want to be on it to begin with, but I am scared that if I don't heal I am going to make matters worse. By the time I saw my doc two weeks ago my throat was so sore and burny and I was losing my voice. I just don't get why I am not experiencing relief on the med (especially since I've made lots of other changes as well). Do I need to switch my ppi? Double my dose? All of the information is overwhelming and I am just learning about alternatives from you all. My doctor's attitude is pretty much "this is not curable and you will need the medicine indefinitely." I am 37 years old, don't need to lose weight, and otherwise healthy (albeit frequently stressed out, which this diagnosis is not helping).

I'd appreciate any help or direction you could offer.

Rosie - I had some of the same symptoms as you. Mostly ear pain, coughing (especially after eating and during exercise), clearing of throat, etc. I don't have any heartburn or burning in my throat at all. I took Omeprazole for two weeks, it helped to clear up the severe ear pain I was having, but I am not a medication fan, so I searched for natural remedies. I started taking aloe vera capsules by NOW foods. It seems to have helped. It won't do as much as the PPI, but if you're looking for an alternative, that's where I started. I also cut out suspect things, but there is no rhyme or reason to the GERD as far as diet goes for me. It can come and go for no reason whatsoever.
