What are some ideas I can try to help with really bad esophageal spasms? The doctor has me on 2.5 mg of valium to help relax them, but last night it was so bad I almost went to the ER. I also lay on a heated back massager from time to time, it helps. Any ideas would be helpful!!!

I was prescribed these like nitrous tablets or something, but never took them. I just let the spasms pass. Eventually, they stopped for the most part.

the doctor bumped my Valium up to 5 mg. I hope this helps. Any other suggestions would be wonderful though.

I've never had this problem but you could try lockets. They have a mild anesthetic in them and may lessen the pain, I know they help my esophagus when its feeling inflamed.

Some natural relaxants are things like peppermint but if you suffer from reflux then be careful as they also increase this.

I used to get them, but after starting magnesium 400 mg, I have not had them anymore. They are horrible, I understand your pain.

Jill I am so sorry you are dealing with this. My rheumatologist also thought a muscle relaxer would help but like you I don't care for the way they make me feel.So spaced out. And my cardiologist thought that Norvasc might help the spasms because they dilate the blood vessels and smooth muscle. I haven't tried the Rx yet but will let you know what I think if I do try them. She only prescribed 2.5 mg because my bp is normal and I am only 105 lbs so she was concerned about prescribing too much as it might cause drowsiness.

Could you tell me what your esophageal spasms feel like? I think I am experiencing them but don't know for sure. My chest feels like it is being squeezed and it is very uncomfortable.

I hope you find relief soon!

For me it feel like someone has shoved a rod through my chest that goes thru to my back. The pain just radiates from there, sometimes all of my upper back throbs and sometimes it goes all the way up as far as my neck. But I also have a failing lower esophagus.
