Greetings Healingwellians. I wanted to post my story and see how many of you all relate.
As the name implies, I am (more like, was) a 29 year old competitive powerlifter. I was a big eater, strong and heavy (5'8'' at 220lbs) and incredibly healthy. A few months back I had a neck injury while squatting some pretty big weight; a nice crunch, and some numbness, after a week or so, all the discomfort subsided. Im not sure if that really relates to the main part of the story, but it fits in the timeline so i figured I should include it.
And no, i didnt ever get it checked out :)
Sometime later that week, after the neck injury, I woke up in the middle of the night with what i can only equate to being electrocuted in the chest. I took my blood pressure (fine), drank some water and went back to bed. A few days later I noticed that I was getting incredibly dizzy at work right after lunch. Not thinking back to my previous neck problem I went to the urgent care and the did an EKG and basically sent me out the door with a script for prilosec. I tossed it in the trash, I had never had heartburn a day in my life. I chocked both episodes up to being a pinched nerve...made sense at the time.
Fast forward a few weeks. I start to notice these little bouts of brain fog and anxiety, especially after lunch, and I developed this strange compulsion to swallow a lot. It wasn't frequent enough to cause me any real distress, and I drank a lot of caffeine so I always blamed it on that. Also, I didn't really pay any attention to it at the time because I had always dealt with sinus/postnasal problems my whole life but my sinus issues had gotten a bit out of control and I developed this clicking in my ears.
Cue Sunday morning March 16th (the day after my last powerlifting meet). I woke up with a sore throat. Throughout that week I noticed this feeling of something being stuck in my throat and I was getting a little hoarse.
Sunday March 23, I wake up very early with what feels like gasoline being poured down my throat. The next 24 hours I develop severe gas, flatulance, bloating, and it feels like im breathing in gasoline. I go back to the Urgent Care, doc hits me with the GERD diagnosis and gives me what I have dubbed "the formula": Omeprazole, Gaviscon, Carafate. The next week was absolutely terrible. Chronic gas, bloating, stomach pain, slow digestion, no appetite, nausea....all the typical culprits. Long story short, I end up in the hospital a week later after taking 2 Zantac and have a terrible reaction. No more Ranitidine for me.
15lbs lost later....
I meet with he GI, he gives me Protonix, which makes me all but crazy (peripheral visual issues and anxiety like you wouldnt believe...well maybe you would) and i schedule my Endo. Thinking I had a HH from the weightlifting, I prepare for the worst. Big surprise, no HH, just "chronic inflammation and some acute gastritis", even reported that the LES seems to be in good shape. Did not expect any of that.
After him giving me the run-around, I get the doc to prescribe me Nexium 40mg. I have the WORST anxiety attacks on that stuff. I self prescribe myself the OTC Omeprazole Magnesium and subsequently fire that GI.
I meet with my GP and give her all the info. She refers me a to a new GI who I absolutely love.
Fast forward to now..... 25lbs lost later....
The omeprazole seems to be containing the heartburn demon. However, a lot of things are still sticking around. MAYBE some of you all can help me with this, I'm thinking GERD/LPR but Im not exactly versed in this particular illness. Im going to list my symptoms from most frequent to least frequent and see how many of you all can relate. Ohh yeah. I meet with my GP tomorrow, im going to talk to her about more testing and plant the Linx idea in her head. Im getting married later this year, no way im going to be miserable for that.
1. Brain fog (like taking way too much cold medicine). Here recently it has been chronic. It gets way worse after eating though. If someone else has had this with reflux please speak up, its probably the most distressing symptom of all. I work as a Nuclear Engineer, I would like to know that if I get this fixed i can get back to normal. I can speculate what causes it, but if someone knows please pass the info along. Any tips to get past this would be welcomed as well.
2. Tightness in throat and urge to swallow, phlegm, cough, hoarseness.
3. Frog noises in throat and constant burping.
4. Bubble-guts.... if you have this, you know what I'm talking about.
5. Bad taste in mouth and occasional burning throat.
6. Sinus dryness and clicking full ears.
7. If i don't take the omeprazole, there is a fire of 1000 burning suns in my chest.
What do my fellow GERD sufferers thing might be going on down there? If the doc thinks the LES looks good and there is no HH why does my stomach hate me? I guess he probably cant really tell whats going on with it just through an endo. I guess it could be TLESRs too.
Yall rock. Thanks for reading! Any tips are welcomed.
