In another post I indicated I had quit ppi’s cold turkey and was doing ok with a Zantac every other day or so. Well today I take that back (day 17 cold turkey Prilosec) I feel horrid right now. I took a zantac on Tuesday none yesterday and about an hour ago I started feeling like c***. I just popped a Zantac about 30 minutes ago and am hoping it takes effect soon.

On July 7th I have an appointment with a GI doctor for consultation. Does anybody have any ideas to get me by until then. I do not want to start back up on the PPI’s as the side effects were horrid even though I going thru the alternative right now.

Hi skooby.

I would say it's time to visit the friendly gastroenterologist. If Zantac isn't working you may need something more. That could be taking it every day, changing when you take it, going to a better PPI ... I bet he'll want to take a look at your esophagus, maybe do some tests.

I know you don't like PPIs, but they're not all alike. For one thing OTC ones aren't prescription strength. For another, not everyone tolerates all of them. I could only use Aciphex and Nexium.

For now, I'd try taking Zantac daily and having some TUMS on hand too. Keep track of your diet - food journal - and see if there are trigger foods involved. I started this on the advice of my allergist. I found I have a few sensitivities and now get along well when I avoid them. My triggers have nothing to do with spiciness or acid or blandness, so following the old-fashioned reflux diets was useless.
