My child has just had a bravo ph study done for 24 hrs due to continuing pain problems from what the docs thought as acid reflux, The PH study was reading from 3.6 (mainly when drinking or eating) to over 10 (how high I don't know as the reader only goes up to 10 then flashes 'Hi'. The machine very rarely went less than Hi during the night. My child suffers from sleepless nights and recent tests showed her heart rate is increasing to 180 whilst sleeping - expected pain ?? has anyone had Hi results ..... if so what was you told. I have to wait 6 weeks for the results but this is really concerning me as I kind of interpreted it as very high alkaline which can do just as much damage & cause just as much pain , Thanks

Welcome, Melanie.

10 is as high as it goes. 0 is the lowest. Low is acid, as you know, and means acid reflux. But a high reading means the thing probably fell off and was in the intestine where it is alkaline.

How long did the low readings continue? 3.6 is acid.

My Bravo was supposed to be 48 hours, but it fall off at about 24 hours. Mine started out at 0 to 2 no matter if I was eating (trying to but couldn't get anything but a little liquid down) or standing or lying down. Then suddenly the thing went to 8. I kept a record because I knew they wouldn't tell me.

Hi thank you for the reply. Bravo fitted 10am friday, high ph started late afternoon\early evening the same day. Bravo wasnt passedout until the wednesday of the following week, how long does it take to come through the system?Do you think it fell off? :(.
high acid was showing at tea time but didnt keep looking all the time. Sure though it was showing over 8 mid afternoon?
Sorry for typo but replying on my phone!

The capsule sends a signal to the machine that records pH and time, so there is a record. Ask the doctor, or the place that did the procedure. I'll bet it fell off early. Waiting 6 weeks is ridiculous.

Was he asleep when it was placed? It's hard to get the thing pinned to the wall of the esophagus. And that's what they do - pin it right to the tissue. It takes 45 seconds to get it placed right.

The stomach isn't going to be putting out alkaline fluid. The esophagus is supposed to be neutral, about 7, although some put it at 4 - 6. Below 4 is generally considered to be reflux, from what I've read.

Expelling the capsule depends on how fast the person's system works.

I wouldn't be surprised if they try to tell you the test was a failure so there are no results. I'd ask what results there were. I don't believe nothing was recorded, since you saw the numbers. The test could have been a failure because not enough results were recorded, but have a frank discussion with the doctor about repeating it. How old is the child? As a mom, not a doctor, I would think twice before putting a small child through this again.
