Does anyone have vocal chord paresis? I thought I was better, but now it's 7 doctors later. I was diagnosed with LPR by two doctors (including Jamie Koufman) from a throat scope, then told today by another doctor that I don't have LPR at all, but vocal chord paresis that is causing my ONLY symptom--asthma-like breathing problems. He recommended a little bit of Elavil to calm the nerves and help heal. I've been on proton pumps for a month and they don't seem to be doing anything. I was giving Klonopin, which really helped, but I can't stay on it because it's an addictive drug. The only other thing that helps is baking soda and water, which lets me breathe.

Someone here named JACKET mentioned in a post that he or she knew the best doctor for this in the world? Is there such a person? Every doctor I see contradicts the other.

Sigh. Thanks for listening.

Hi,
I don't know if I have that, going to ent at the end of month. Had scopes, all the GI tests, etc. It's been 3 years! They haven't found anything. My major symptom is breathing too! Absolutely so frustrating. But this past couple weeks its also been really BAD throat constriction and strangulation feeling. I just gargled with baking soda and water. Not feeling any relief. Do you drink it or gargle? How much do you use? Have you started the Elavil? Any side effects? I hate meds. Also, did the Peptest from England and results are negative for the Pepsin in the airways!
I'd be interested who the doctor is too.
Hoping you feel better!

Have you tries taking supplements? Iron or magnesium deficiency could cause breathing problems.

Georg1301--I put 1/2 tsp.of baking soda in water and drink it. It almost always clears things up for me. I can't believe you've had this for three years! I started elavil, so side effects, but it's only been one day. I hate meds, too. Angelcat, I take a lot of supplements and go to an acupuncturist, which helps a bit. It's just terrifying to live your life wondering if you are going to be able to breathe. Plus, all the doctors contradict one another!

Me too. Have a lot of breathlessness to the point that my ribcage feels sore. :-/ but diaphragm exercises seem to help me a lot, hopefully I could breath normally again. Also had very itchy cough.

Yes, the breathing exercises really help. Especially the Yoga "Breath of Fire" one. Alternate nostril breathing also opens up my lung. You just reminded me to do them, Angelcat! Thank you.

Angelcat, are you taking or did you take the dreaded proton pumps? Anything else? What are you eating? I've been doing the Dropping Acid diet for months now, but eating out is a nightmare since even you order rice and veggies, you never know what spices might be lurking (Black pepper sets me off. Black freaking pepper!) I've been vegan for years, but started eating salmon just because it was sometimes the only thing on a menu that I could get plain enough for me to eat. Do you get that rumbling in your chest, too?

PS, so far after one day on Elavil, only thing I noticed was it made me really sleepy when I took it, and I was a little tired in the morning. Also a little blurred vision and increased tinnitus, I think--but that could be from the other ridiculous meds I'm on, too. I read on these boards that some people find relief after a week on Elavil, so I am trying to be VERY hopeful.

Eleanor please keep us posted with the Elavil. I'm feeling hopeful for you! I actually feel swelling in my nasal passages and in my throat that constricts my breathing, along with the feeling of not getting enough air. I can actually feel when the swell releases which is such a relief, BUT it doesn't stop the feeling completely in my lungs. I am trying to describe it the best I can! When I tell the doctors about the swelling they immediately think like a stuffed nose, sinus stuffy. But it's different....it's hard to describe it.
I usually take Zantac but noticed yesterday the throat constriction was worse after taking so today I haven't had any. I will probably take Pepcid before bed. Going to try the baking soda and water now.

Hi Eleanor! No, I haven't had Ppi's for a long time. I took it for only two weeks. I'm not sure if it's enough, as I have realized I had mild GERD for about 4 yrs now. I only had gone to the doctor this April because the symptoms multiplied.
I changed a lot in my diet, I avoided coffee, chocolate, citrus fruits completely (except lemon). I tried gluten and sugar free diet, but I'm from the philippines and everyone and every place here used to eat rice and bread, so it's really hard for me to avoid them.
My first symptoms were bloating, burping, stomach pain, dry throat, cough, shortness of breath, diarrhea, back pain and lump in my throat. But most of them have disappeared one by one. As of now, I have muscle pain in my upper back, chest pain, Itchy and dry cough, and on and off shortness of breath. It's as if I can't breath deeply and fully. Though it's not as worst as when I first had it.
I can say I'm better now, maybe 60% improved. But my symptoms are still circulating and shifting from time to time. I can't remember when I had no symptoms at all!
As for now, I am only taking anti histamine for my allergy and cough as prescribed by the doctor. Im not taking any antacids or ppis. I am also taking vitamin d3, coz I've been working homebased for about 3 yrs now. I thought I may be deficient in it that's why I have body and joint aches. I can say I am already feeling an improvement. Im also aiming to take Magnesium, hoping it will help with my muscle pain and anxiety. I found out that it's a muscle and mind relaxant and has lots of health benefits. Magnesium deficiency causes muscle pain, anxiety, breathlessness, chest pain, weakness, fatigue and REFLUX and many more. I really want to try it to see if I will improve.
