My last scope was clear--no sign of reflux at all, and doctor now thinks I never had LPR, but vocal chord paresis that is causing breathing problems. I'd love to get off the proton pump but I know you have to do it carefully. Can anyone offer help how to taper off? I worry about asking the doctor because a friend asked her doctor, who told her the wrong way and she ended up feeling horrible--and with C Diff! Do you do one day on, and one off? Do you supplement and take something like Zantack or Pepcid instead? And how long is the process and what can I expect? I have only been on them for three months.

thank you, thank you for any information you can give me!

Eleanor:
I was able to come off Nexium by slowly weening down. I started with an OTC Zegrid every day and took Gaviscon as needed. I did this for a while, probably a few weeks or even a month. I then went to a prilosec so that I could cut the pill in half. I took a half for another month. I finally am now taking Pepcid AC (an H2 Blocker) twice a day. Stick to a blander diet since you may have acid rebound. Drink a lot of water, use Gaviscon if you need.

Hi, I was on two omeprazole pills a day; one morning, one night. I can't remember the strength.

I couldn't get a sensible answer from a Dr about how to come off it, but I did hear a lot of people say there's a "bounce" when you come off and your stomach produces excess acid.

The way I decided to do it was I went down to one pill a day (so half dose) for two weeks, then I used a single pill or gaviscon if things got bad.

This way was quite comfortable. I went cold turkey after my op (as an idiotic Dr told me to) but that was a very, very bad idea!

I hope this helps somewhat,

LD.

Hi Ericapeace,
Thank you for your feed back.
Is there a way to write a private message to another member of the forum?
I was taking 40 Mg Omeprazol twice a day for 2 months, but I felt the acid in my throat anyway and my palat was burned and my throat was super red. I went down to Omeprazol 20 Mg twice a day for a few days,( I asked the gastro and he said yes) but meanwhie I went on a vacation for 17days, and I started to take Priloec 20 mg  at night and a Zantac 150 mg a day. In my trip, I run out of prilosec , so I started taking ZANTAC 150 MG 2 A DAY. I could notice that certain acidic foods made my symptoms worst while I was on the plane takingoff, but in the trip, I started to eat everything and the symptoms were less and less, I almost did not feel the lump in throat or the acid. In the mornings the throat irritation went away fast and I did not have it at all some days. Even I was taking 75 mg Zantac twice a day!!, because I run out of 150 mg zantacs, BUT when I came back home, next day, I woke up with no symptoms, BUT after reading the reflux  symptoms of a friend in her email, THE SYMPTOMS STARTED AGAIN!! I wake up with irritated throat.  but in the trip, it went away and I did not feel much the symptoms! Eventhough I ate everything I wanted! and the symptoms did not get worse at all.
I was distracted, and I think that helped me a lot not feel the "symptoms" much.
I chew Slippery Elms, DGL tablets, tums, and chewing gum after eating, but sometimes I could notice that not chewing gum or chewing these tablets I felt better. I have not tried the Gaviscon yet.
Seems like when I came back I started to feel the "symptoms" again!! , but I did not have them much in my vacation?  I am taking now Zantac 150 mg 2 a day. Do you think that I am doing it ok?

What is the diference of taking Omeprazol or H2 blockers?

Thank you Ericapeace. Your comment has help me a lot. I hope and pray that all the people in this forum gets well.
Hugs
