After suffering since April with what appeared to be gastritis and oesophageal pain and having my Omeprazole quadrupled now from 10 mg to 40 mg daily- I went to see my GP yesterday when I was having the pain in what I thought was my oesophagus-v slightly to the right of my breastbone. She prodded me and as I was a little tender when breathing in said it could be ' Murphy's Sign' which is a possible indicator of gallstones so I have to have an ultrasound. Being the UK will have to wait 6 weks(!) but even though it is a depressing possibility I was actually pleased as I t offered a possible explanation of why I have felt so bloody awful on and off for 9 weeks or so. The symptoms are apparently v similar to the acid reflux that most of t he poor people on here suffer from. I have had intermittent crampy stomach and pain inn my middle chest ( which when I got made me feel ill and hot as if I had a temperature ) and sometimes pain between my shoulder blades. Loss of appetite and acidy taste in my mouth and throat.
It was a good call from an excellent GP - what I wondered is how many of you people may have the same? Certainly a lot of the posts I have read seem like that could be the case.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Recommend that anyone talk to their Dr about t his possibility as it could be that the ' flare ups ' that you are having is not your GERD but gallstones

Thanks for the post, Croftboy, and welcome to the forum.

There's no reason one can't have both things at the same time.I would suggest trying to get tested for both gallbladder problems and reflux. Then, if you should happen to need surgery, they can do both at the same time. It's done all the time in the States.

Thanks Alcie I'm hoping it won't come to that but take your point that the two could be occurring at the same time. I did wonder though how many people might be getting these symptoms without being tested for gallstones?
Take care

A lot can be diagnosed just from the specific symptoms of these different problems. The pains are different and having reflux or not is indicative.

I hope you get thorough workups for both problems.

In addition, it would be helpful to you to find out if you have a hiatal hernia. A barium swallow should show that and also show if you have reflux going on or if your swallow is not working properly.

I had my wrap Feb 28/14. Now I'm seeing another surgeon Wed to have my gallbladder removed. I was curious in the past if I had gallbladder issues but not investigated since 2008. Since 2 weeks post op I've had gallbladder issues and now getting worse. At this point I have re developed some reflux but not the acid burning, more regurgitation type. Unsure if my wrap is ok or not but curious if my gallbladder is causing all of this. I had a severe attack almost 2 weeks ago and feeling rough ever since. Definitely have bipoth issues investigated and have one surgery, not 2. Good luck

Thanks for that and sorry to hear that you have really been through it- I'm hoping that I won't need any surgery - my reflux had until April been settled and had no problems for 7 years - which made me think that these latest episodes may be GB related rather than reflux as such-whatever it's been it certainly made me feel rough and drained intermittently for last 2 months. At the moment been ok this week and eating and drinking normally so I'm praying that will continue.
Hope you feel better soon x
