I've been having bad digestive issues for a few years now, but it's been worse since the beginning of this year. My anxiety has been considerably higher, but I'm dealing with it and getting better every day. However digestion still seems to be an issue. Diarrhea, bloating, gas pains, excess gas...all that fun stuff. My doctor wants me to try prescription strength prilosec for a month to see if that helps before going to a GI doctor. My question is, this is only my second day, and I almost feel worse. Does it get worse before it gets better or should I discontinue use? I feel way more gassy and bloated and acidy. It's not at all debilitating. I can go about my day and eat. But I feel like crap. I just want to feel semi-normal again! I also find that things get worse mid-cycle and around the start of my period so I fear it may also be related to hormones as I have either PMDD or perimenopause. Or both.

Thanks in advance!

motherearth3, I'm so sorry for your pain .. I'm in the same boat, too and after all my research believe my body can't tolerate any PPI's. I've been on Nexium 40mg 2x daily for 2 years and have never gotten relief from acid reflux, despite all the other positive lifestyle changes I've made.

I visited my GI doctor recently and he gave me samples of Zegerid 40mg to try. After 5 days, I was at 'death's door' .. each day using it was worse. I didn't believe I could feel worse. I went back to the Nexium and then consulted a pharmacist for proper 'weaning off' schedule. These PPI's were not meant to be used LONG TERM as they seem to create the very symptoms they are supposed to ease.

If these drugs aren't helping then we shouldn't be taking them. It will be at least another month before I know if the PPI's are causing all of my misery but since I've started weaning off, I have had some improvement but it takes a long time and I will suffer through it because being ON that poison wasn't improving anything and I'm so tired of feeling like CRAP all the time!

motherearth3, have you ever tried H-2 blockers? I don't think most doctors know enough about the side effects and how these potent medications can cause major damage and misery to many of their patients.

Best to you all from a 'fellow' sufferer!

very sorry to hear about your condition/ But your symptoms seem more consistent with IBS than stomach disorder. I hade been battling with gastritis for 1 year now. The doctors did not recognise i had gastritis until january so for 7 months they put me on ppi and they have made my life Hell and nothing short of it. The PPI which were meant to help me did complete opposite. Not only did they reek havoc with the nerves in my stomach which caused me problems with standing up and sitting down, but they also cases me damage. They also seem to make my stomach feel like it had expanded and touched my rib cage, it was hell. They also amplified any stomach pain i had. The doctors discarded all this and i believed them jumping from ppi to ppi and got no better. I suffers from blurred vision, sever cramping, stomach ache and these i was able to tolerate and long term they caused pain to my gallbladder. Anyhow, did endoscopy after 3 months and it showed no inflammation, tried to cut my nightie dose in a tapering dose and by 5am i was in hell. What doctors though was hypersensitivity and fried nerves and giving me wrong meds foe it and BAD BAD DIET ADVICE has now turned out to ne gastritis from hypersecrerion. The medication would flare up my gastritis every time i tried to come off it, and so i went back on nexium for another 3 months and believing their visceral hypersensitivity nonsense, but this time round i felt 100x worser than before the ppi. I pushed for another endoscopy and it confirmed what i had gastritis but now 12 weeks later my gallbladder was killing me, i had to get off nexium because again the doctors wanted to remove it and said its unlikely to be caused by the ppi. That's when i decided enough is enough, no more ppi for me, i stopped the nexium cold turkey 6 days ago and it has been hell for me stomach, my gastritis has flared up bad but my mind feel so much better , no more stupidity and 6 days on i sit and stand and my gallbladder pain had died down by 70% and getting better day by day.

to sum up, ppi are godsend for some and truly evil for others. If i believed the doctors i would of done serious damage ro myself. To hell with stupid doctors and their ppi for every problem gastrointestinal.

i am now trying to heal my gastritis naturally, its harder nut ill get their in the end. I am taking sucralfate and gaviscon, helping a little but not much. Have sever burning in the stomach. Coming of nexium cold turkey flared it up again.

itsy few other ppi and if they don't work, just listen to your body and not doctors always, your body will tell you and guide you.

good luck

Thank you both for sharing your stories and all the information! I'm so sorry to hear of how much suffering you've endured.

It amazes me. The older I get I see how much doctors rely on drugs for the answer to everything. I do believe some are necessary and try helpful, but many just seem like a bandaid. Here...take this and go! As I said, I've also been dealing with bad anxiety and panic attacks since December of last year. I do all the work up to make sure it wasn't anything else. Of course the first thing they did was prescribe antidepressants. I did try one and it was the worst three days of my life while I was on it. Horrible! I was certain I was dying. I stopped and was prescribed another. Did not take that, but decided to try to help myself more naturally. I've been in therapy and have been taking better care of myself by exercising more and eating better. During episodes of bad anxiety I could calm it with half a Xanax. And now I haven't even needed to take any Xanax since May! I still feel the anxiety, but I have tools to calm myself without meds all the time.

Sorry for the long, off topic story! Basically what I'm saying is I'm glad to hear your stories (though not about your suffering) and I think I'm going to stop the prilosec and maybe see what else I can do.

Sending you both well wishes!

Hi

Just wanted to say, try and push your doctor for endoscopy if you feel that your anxiety is getting worser because of your symptoms. It might be worth trying a diet most of us do when we have gastritis. Its certainly possible you might have gastritis but unaware of it. Maybe try gaviscon Tums for a while and see if you see any Improvements. If you don't want to take PPI, you could try H2 blockers, they are not as effective as p5pi but more gentler on you in the sense they dont cut 90-80% of stomach acid, but more closer to 50% mark. If you don't want medicines then try changing diet and antacids. Try a low fat diet and stay away from dairy and spicy foods, onions, garlic and fizzy deinks. Just search online gastritis diet. Unfortunately i can't eat nothing but boiled rice, chicken and some honey. You really need to experiment with what works for you.

wish you all the best and let us know how you get on.
