I have silent acid reflux, so sometimes I feel the acid and burn, but mostly I don't. My main problems are an upset stomach sometimes and flutterings in my chest, which can often feel like I am about to have a heart attack, but now that I know what they are they don't bother me at all..so I don't want to take any meds for this, for two reasons, firstly I have Ulcerative Colitis and take meds for that, and I really don't want to add anything else into the mix. I also feel that if my symptoms dont get worse I can live with them..is that a normal approach, is there anyone with GERD not taking anything apart from Tums every now and again?

Sometimes leaving GERD alone can cause more damage, because acid isn't a good thing in the esophagus. Someone could develop narrowing of the esophagus, esophageal ulcers, or Barrett's esophagus (which increases the risk for esophageal cancer). If you have acid reflux once in awhile, I would say Tums may work, but if you do have GERD, which is usually chronic, then it may be best to go to a doctor for it. I can understand you may not want to take medication that could possibly effect your Ulcerative Colitis symptoms. Your doctor would know better though, he/she could prescribe something that may make you feel better, but won't disrupt your UC.

Hi

Have you always had acid reflux? did this GERD start any chance after your diagnosis of Ulcerative colitis? what meds are you taking for UC?

because if its prednisone or anti inflammatories ? because they can cause reflux by causing gastritis. I had silent reflux but no pain at first and then slowly got pain in my stomach and mega reflux that burnt like hell.

I agree with bluewatergirl, reflux or heartburn over many years will increase your chance of oesophageal cancer although its small risk it still something that needs treatment or remedy. Usually diet changes are sufficient so maybe start there if you can. Try following a gastritis/GERD type diet and see if it makes a difference.

good luck and all the best.

Thank you for your replies...I was diagnosed with UC in Feb of this year and the acid reflux came on recently, about two weeks ago I'm afraid I over did the e-cig, silly and stupid but these things happen, and I have not touched one since, it even effected my breathing! I have taken on board what you have both said and will see how I get on, actually today I went to see a chiropractor and I have felt better all day, not sure this will last, or just temporary, he wants to see me again on Wednesday.

So I am thinking that if I continue to feel better I might not have to go to the docs, I am going to see how the next couple of weeks pan out, and then if I am definitely not right I will go and see him

I meant to say I take Mesalamne, Pentasa 2g a day
