I am 67 and seem to have a problem with carafate. Onit 4 days. I have been not DX fully yet- MD and Er said gastritis. I assume this is an ulcer. Further blood tests and ultrasound and endoscopy scheduled.
My concern is carafate info sheet says to be careful of aluminum toxcity= drowsiness and possible seizures and ocnvulsions
if you are over 65.

I was ok first two days on it- after that I was so drowsy /head fullness and very afraid when I picked up my granddaughter from Day Care.

I also am on Hizentra (plasma) twice a week. I worry there about kidney finction but have never had an issue.

WIll drowsiness go away? Should I cut the dosage which is 4 a day (1 gram)
I am also on prilosec 20mg two times a day.

It does help with stomach pain or ulcer pain.

if its listed on the leaflet accompanying the tablets/liquid then its most likely you are
suffering side effects. But the thing with sucralfate is that's not really metabolised by the liver but
rather excreted by the kidneys. If its not listed its still quite possible its causing you the effects you describe, I suppose only way to find out is to try either stop or reduce it and see how you fare.

You could also trying drinking lots of water during the say and see if that helps.

I found that it made me want to vomit much more than just the gastritis alone and after 7-10 days the side effect reduced dramatically.

Are you taking PPI or H2 blockers at all?

Thank you James

I am also on prilosec 20mg 2X a day
Previously was on Pepcid.

I have had a nissen fundiplication in past. I am on .81 aspirin a day as I had a small silent stroke 10 yrs ago.

Stopped naproxen Dr which I took PRN .

I am glad to hear it stops after 7 days or so.

The MD (I called when I saw the post) said to try 1/2 pill 4X a day instead of 1 pill 4 times a day.

Hi there

Unfortunately everybody is different individually and that means you must try by elimination. You should listen to your doctors but generally i find GI the worst of the bunch. I would try the reduced dose your doctor suggested and if still persisting then i suppose you will have to discuss stopping it if possible. Any chance your symptoms are from PPI, i could not tolerate PPI and some people get delayed side effects, like after 2 weeks, 2 months, 2 years 10 years and son in. Every one is different so unfortunately you must proceed with elimination of tablets and try find the one causing you the issues. Please discuss with your doctor before reducing a medication which is vital for your health and i am sure he will proceed with logic.

I can't tolerate PPI at all, not even H2 blockers and i for side effects that doctors were just not prepared to reason with. They sometimes get it so wrong its scary and i was having side effects that were killing me slowly. I stopped ppi and now dealing with my gastritis naturally, which is hard and painful. Unfortunately PPI have messed with my gallbladder and its hurting and when i came off them then pain reduced by 70% but now its kindda beginning to fluctuate so i am now going to cut the sucralfate and all other meds, even stopped taking Galviscon. I am kindda desparate to save my gallbladder so in desperation i am stopping it all. I wish could keep taking sucralfate as it was helping me with gastritis, i guess that's how cookie crumbles, sometimes :(

fortunately you are not in my situation, all the best and let me know how it goes.

Thanks James I am sorry you are having difficulties too. I tried 1/2 pill twice today and will take 1/2 at bedtime. Because of the silent stroke I had all my Md's say I should be on .81 aspirin a day and also on Pepcid ac or prilosec.

I have had my gallbladdder out when I had a hiatal hernia repair (twice).

I know what you mean about trying to talk to MD's. Mine (GI) is away for 4 more weeks and I am dealing with his partner who has seen me once in the past.

He has agreed to switch the carafate med if I do not adjust to it.
Continued healing to you.

I tried an omega 3 today but it was so big- I could not swallow it. Going back to drugstore and return the second bottle which I have not opened. Read online it helps with healing gastritis. On line Dr Ronald Hoffman site - some natural healing methods.
Thanks again
